A Little Dab Of Guitar Genius
Authors Note:
If you are kind enough to read this, this is by no means definitive. This is actually quite restricted. They may or may not be the BEST.(Rolling Stone can argue that one) It is made up of guitarists who were recording in my lifetime. There are many artists like Robert Johnson who provided the ground work for much of our music today. Totally confess this is long---but I found it impossible to eliminate anyone.
Like everyone who hears him, Mr.Hendrix left me awe struck
he could blast through songs like "Machine Gun"
make you feel like you just hit a truck
"Little Wing" and "The Wind Cries Mary" two of the prettiest songs I have ever heard
would have been great to be at the window while Jimi was recording
and just watch like a little bird
Two Jimi did influence, Clapton and Page
Clapton's work I really must say seems to get better with the passing of age
"Old Love" with Robert Cray and "It's Probably Me" in which Sting sings
so satisfy my palate and not missing a single thing
Page got me hooked on trying to play guitar
we all wanted to play "Stairway To Heaven"
his work on "All Of My Love" had me practicing for sunup until way after eleven
My heart grows saddest because we no longer have Stevie
Mr. Vaughan the Texan that could tear it up
could leave you totally drenched even without a single cup
the only one who comes close to Hendrix's talent with "Little Wing"
"Tick Tock" with his brother --- in loving our neighbors means everything
Not quite as well known is Freddie King compared to other Kings around
but without him no "Have You Ever Loved A Woman"
or "Hide Away" would I ever have found
Carlos Santana even though lately to me he has gone bland
with "Bella" and "Written In Sand" sure enough gotta to give him a hand
when I try to emulate him I end up just breaking a string
his positive vibe is contagious and always makes my heart sing
Neil Schon who at the tender age of 15 was under Santana's wing
oh man by the time he was in Journey he was really doing his thang!
"Once You Love Somebody", touch of blues and in the pocket
hits that groove so sweetly you just want to tuck it away in a locket
Peter White was content to play keys for a guy name Al
but with "On The Border" he picked up the acoustic guitar
since then with tunes like "Another Day" with Basia
in jazz worlds he has gone quite far
George Harrison maybe the most underrated for he didn't need to show his muscle
got in and played his part never, felt like the listener was being hustled
his work with Beatles, "Here Comes The Sun" and Something" hooked me right away
"Cheer Down" and "Love Comes To Everyone" I could listen to everyday
Now don't let Joyce Cooling fool you for she is quite easy on the eyes
but her axe can wail and moan with the best man of any size
"Global Cooling" a play on the name and Callie so hit the spot
sweet serenades in jazzland always a smile when her music is bought
Mark Knopfler, oh so eclectic with his tasty picks
makes one want to move whenever you hear his licks
"Brothers In Arms" addressed my political consciousness with special care
"Sultans Of Swing" went beyond his English upbringing
in a way few others would even dare
Bonnie Raitt oh man if there was one player
that I would love to play with in a jam
in addition to the voice the slide guitar is so at her command
"Have A Heart" and "Love Letter" state the trials of heartache to well
further explanation not needed no other words do we need to tell
So there you have a little sampling
of the guitar pickers that have been sent
forged my appreciation of the axe instrument
I have put in at least my two cents!
