Unearthly creatures
They say she wears her vulnerability
like a suit of armour, and it’s beautiful
and maybe I’d look at her that way too
if she hadn’t looked through me like I was invisible
In my head she was something
as magnificently untouchable as a mermaid
a curious creature of myths and legends
that I was dying to meet on the outside of my dreams
And in reality, she is more magnificently untouchable
than I could ever have dreamed or imagined
but in her presence I don’t feel humbled
in her presence I am afraid, and overwhelmed by the divinity of her scent
that crashes over me like a tidal wave blotting out all the stars in night sky
so that there is nothing but her image for me to stutter over in a mumbled “hi”
For a moment, I am a poet without words
I am awkward and flushed and then
…then she is gone
and I am filled with the cacophony
of unspoken language
all the things I could have said, should have said
but didn’t
And so I simply watch her from afar
a shooting star, conversing with all the rising stars on the horizon
and knowing that I am not one of them
tethered to the earth, as I am
a mere mortal, in the realm of Gods
