One-Sided Lover

I have come to the conclusion.
That love is merely an illusion.
To distract us from achieving our goals.
I mean, who would want to just give their heart to another.
To trust them like you would a sister or a brother.
To trust that they wouldn’t take it and break it.
And turn your world upside down.

I mean, if they truly loved you in the first place.
They’d do anything and everything to prevent seeing a frown on your face.
To know that someone loves you for you, not the money you make.
Or what grades you got in school.

To constantly worry about your significant other.
To only want the best for them.
And nothing else.
To do everything in your power to make every minute you spend with them perfect.
And to complete their world as they simultaneously complete yours.

Love for me has always been a one-sided thing.
There’s never been a moment where someone I loved.
Loved me back and ever said “mean the world to me.”
Or that they even cared about my existence in the first place.

I would do everything and anything in my power for you.
If you would just say, even in a whisper.
That you loved me too.
