Coming Into My Own

Be true to yourself is what they say,
that is how to find your way.
Discerning heart must take the task
and to one's inner voice does ask,
"Of blended shades and muddled hues,
can you afford to pay the dues?"
How do you calculate the cost
of wishes hushed and moments lost?
Weigh wisdom, passion, common sense
through hindsight's introspective lens.
Apply today the lessons won.
Much easier it's said than done.
The promises unsaid be kept
and let the unshed tears be wept.
Our good intentions often cut
when living life with eyes wide shut.
So I learned the truth may hurt
but not so much as coddled words.
