Being a favorite distraction also implies that you are just for amusement until other more important people become available.

You are correct. Distraction can mean different things. My intent and the meaning one derives from a reading may vary. I had the negative connotation in mind but you read it another way. Makes me feel as though the poem might be mildly successful. :)
