Image for the poem In Footstep

In Footstep's Shadow

She is neither too young
and acting too old
nor is she too old
and acting too young

but rather
she is riding
that fence
between her youth
and that moment

when it would seem
that she will no longer be able
to claim that status
of the statuesque,

the slender phase
that lasts so briefly
when her legs are pins
and her feet can take her

all the way
from where she was
to where she thinks
she wants to be

but then,
when she arrives,
she will have wanted
to have tried
a different road

but understand
that she would not
have known
that now
if she had not
done that then.
