rockology

in my wayward & worrisome life,
i’ve harbored in the comfort & romance of music.
guitar melodies weeping, the crying of horns,
& drumbeats like choreographed thunder.

Elvis was first to shake me & rattle me,
book me into heartbreak hotel & lose the key.

John, Paul, George, & Ringo came together,
told me to hold her hand,
(because i only want to dance with you)
& remember things we said today.

Mick Jagger wet my face with his screams,
& moved like the Prince of Dementia.
the Stones proclaimed that life should be navigated
with music, rebellion, & drugs.

Jefferson Airplane (who later travelled by Starship)
chased a white rabbit, & said
go ask Alice, because she knows…she just knows.
(they were right: my mother’s name was Alice).

Jimi Hendrix introduced me to foxy ladies
& the wind whispering Mary.

Janis Joplin, whose lovers took a little piece
of her heart, & another, & another,
until there was nothing left but a tearful song
placed in the ground.

Iron Butterfly tortured me with in-a-gadda-da-vida,
rock anthem that has meaning in no other language
but the heart’s own tongue
(know that i love you, i’ll always be true).

when the Blackhearts put another dime in the jukebox,
Joan Jett spoke for all of us:
i hate myself for lovin you.

the ghosts of music visit me still.
they cry with me, they sing me to sleep.
