The Human Zoo

A confidence builder
that was what she needed.

Maybe a toke
in the back room
where the smell
never stains.

A sip from the jug
where it's hid
in the pantry.

She could hike up her skirt
or roll down her top
and spoil the whole mystery
of what she's made of.

He arrived at the door
with his whiskers unshaven
not turning off the car
for fear it wouldn't restart.

His shirt had a hole
and his belt loops were worn;
his shoes were not new
and his hair was uncombed.

When you don't know
or can't know
or haven't known
you don't know.

"You look pretty," he said.

She smiled back
and reached for his hand
and felt a world better.
