Deadweed Hooks in my Soul

I thought you helped me
and for the sake of art
I drank you deep
breathing bitter air
from a tangled edge
frothing at the moon
watching time
cripple my original form
as you etched your lines
on my face

Long moments, I admit
I stood dazzled
Nights squandered with you
making truth harder to see
But there are glories
far greater in this world
beyond tired vanities
stale peacocks humming
to the beat of fools
I was always drabber than you
always brighter than your deceits

At dawn my hands shook
I flushed away your paraphernalia
It left me stranded
but feeling good
tasting freedom
reclaiming control

At last I understand
you brought me nothing
no hopes worthy to cling to
and as new dreams buzz
my blood runs pure and free
I'll be deaf dumb and blind
to keep away from you
so stay the fuck away from me
