under the blue veil

Under the blue veil

Cotton picking Negroes, chained by wealth and greed
worked by white mans orders, whipped until they bleed
a lower breed, they do protest, at Sunday morning mass
the preacher reads the bible and its miss spelt sequel
and tells the people that all of gods children are created equal
with contradiction thick as treacle and a counter fit free pass
money feeds their hunger, opportunity all around
gold rules over good and the truth cannot be found
progress gagged and bound, lying still under the blue veil
slaves making money, money building ships
spreading white mans evil with poison off their lips
with liberty stripped, all aboard the slave ship setting sail

Romans build a culture, stolen off another’s back
merchants dragging broken souls down a blood stained track
Glory to the brave and strong who conquer all they see
glorify the scenery, buildings tall and grand
there shadows block out the sight of the bodies on the sand
No one hears the sounds of a shamans dying plea
their beliefs must be wiped out, with blood death and grit
following blindly a promise land, but find a fiery pit
as they perch on their everlasting spot, they finally see under the blue Veil
Heroes tried for treason, sinners made to saints
funny how the picture changes depending on who paints
power decides and law is passed, the only truth, a thousand year old tale

Where brave men die and widows cry
and it’s used to re-enforce their lies
with the blood not dry, but more money to be made
The cost of every bullet, paid for in borrowed blood
and a million bodies buried beneath the mud
with every pocket full their memories swiftly fade
Is it right to take a life? If its intent is good?
but when the day of judgement finally comes, who’ll pay penance for the blood?
hands so clean he asks, why he should? But face looks awfully pale
who are we to judge, as we sit idly by?
when oil defines a worthy cause, inspite of who will die
the world looks very dark indeed from under the blue veil
