weeks til faux gunshots cannon booms
join the gr'ill flesh searin cell'bration

aye go in irony(butt unshackled) for
prearranged saxOtonal visit to
local slick new veteran's home
hear amazing sounds of war-chaos booming----
television---
old b&w glory war movie on the bigscreen TV,
but no'one, no body in th'room,
not-a-soul 'watching'....
a joke? i'preciate th'humor of it !
my 1940vintage ugly tenorsax & I play for 30some
old fellas & 1 woman, mostly in wheelchairs, ranging
from maybe 60 to 90+ yrs old....
'I'(eye) do not see amerika as beautiful...all ficticious,
agenda-laden, scam ririddled 'history', veiling
a vicious bloody, ego'agenda of[of]of selfserving brutality---
(again, I digress)....
but
I start out wit a loose swing 'interpretation' of
"America The Beautiful".......
& then on to standard rep of 'familiar' old melodies,
"name-that-tune"........very nice rounds of applause....
'suvivors', now not long to survive the wreckage of Age....
no politics here today...no fckn stilted,stinking orations...
no tales of 'heroism'.........just sound of an old sax'fon, appreciated.....
just a bunch of old guys guys & a gal listening to some passé melodies, waiting for
an inglorious quiet end....no more fckn parades, pleas

Politics is for the young, the angry, or the well-invested. It would be a great thing I imagine if we could nave a national day of forgetting. Playing name that tune and forgetting about tomorrow (and all of the tomorrows gone by) sounds like a quite fine holiday. You always find a way to work some true melodies out of the the old standards... this poem is no exception.

Steve's comment is a good one; thank you Steve. He's one of the
few on this slightly shabby (but beautifully egalitarian) site
who actually takes the time to think about what they write.
I'd like to add that I (old left-winger that I am) frequently write
political poems. They're usually (but, thank the fates, not always)
terrible whiny things that sound clichéd and insincere. One of the
hardest types to write.
You do it well. How you weaved the two threads together, each a
metaphor for the other... And it's not just your manic energy and
original style: You have a calm, rational part of you that's
evident from here (though, it seems, not always from where you
sit) that's able to guide the others. And the photographs! Many
of your poems could be more accurately described as 'mixed media'
(as they say in the art world) because the words and images are so
entwined.
But whatever, you know how much I appreciate your work.
(And, of course, this is on my reading list.)

the egalitarian approach of this site is refreshing,but ygotta take the tripe wit the ripe. However, igotta stay way away from the forums & competitions...the self-seriousness is liable to kill me laughing...& nobody gets the jokes I throw in

Yes, well, probably a good thing. I like to enter competitions run by
either people whose poetry or opinions I like (Biased? Of course) or
ones I think are petty or just plain wrong. On the latter I enter
sarcastic or too-serious ones just for the hell of it. Sometimes the sarcastic
ones where I purposely write a TERRIBLY bad poem actually win.
This is both somewhat frightening; and, always, enjoyable.
The forums are great for abusing people (a character flaw of mine).
But, I take pride in abuse that is subject specific and never
based on the person (well, most of the time).
