No One Will Stop For Me Today

Stranded out by the side of the road
I can’t bare the thought of another car passing by
As I stick out my thumb and hope for the best.
The road is long and curves ever so slightly
As it stretches through the foothills of
The rolling countryside of nowhere.
Where do all the cars go
As they race past me without
Even slowing down to look
At me?

I sit upon my suitcase
As the clouds begin to gather
I watch them in amazement
As they gather in all directions.
How does that happen?
All the different air currents
Pushing them around
In different levels of the stratosphere.
I remember a kite that I was flying once
Blue and white, 15 feet from top to bottom,
Astounded by the way it changed directions
As it travels further and further
as it melted into the blue sky.

The cars change directions
Back and forth they travel
I’ve noticed a number of them
Rolling past me in the morning
Again, they travel past me in the afternoon
Going to work and returning
But I’m still here on the highway
Waiting for a ride, yet no one stops.
To busy these days to help a stranger out
Or is it the fear that they feel as they see me here
They don’t know me and they don’t want to know me.
If they let me into their car
They have to let me into their life
And that will never do in this day.

A cat walks towards me
As lie down
On the soft shoulder
No longer using the suitcase as a chair
It has become my pillow.
The clouds as still flowing through
And the cat takes a look at me
Probably never seen some one
As they lay on a blanket
With a suitcase for a pillow
On the side of the highway
On the gravel of that soft shoulder.

The stones dig into my back
Hurts somewhat, but not enough
To stop me from relaxing.
That cat is sniffing at the suitcase
Not bothered by my presence
So I extent my hand to pet it
And the cat jumps back a bit
“Don’t worry, I’ll not hurt you,”
I try to make it calm
And I can tell he realizes
That he’s alone, just like me
And needs a little company.

So the cat lets me pet him
He's scruffy and dirty and skinny
But he has character
And I wondered why this feral cat
Wasn’t afraid of me at all
Till it dawned on me that he was alone
I was alone, but together
We had each other

Still no one stopped and picked me up
But the clouds began to break apart
And float away to leave blue sky
But only for a moment
The cat and I still sat by the road
As the sun hit the horizon
And the sky turned crimson
Before the sun goes out
And stars fill up the blackness.

Tomorrow is another day
Maybe better then the last
But tonight, just me and the cat
Under this star spotted sky
And you know
Life’s not that bad
After all.
