The Dark Woods
I stumbled upon a lovely wood as I walked my path
It beckoned to me step inside, explore its unknown places
Mesmerized by its charming call I respond without reserve
Love instantly embraced me, captured me fully
The leaves whispered to my vanity of secret longings
The light played sensual games along my skin
as trees promised protections and shade within
Trust walked me deeper, never marking my way out
I drank in the hope of canopied home
like a suckling babe awakes from deepest sleep
greedily taking all that is offered
swallowing it deeply into the very core of hunger
Safely in the arms of oak, belly full of lovely words
I dropped my cloak, a tightly wrapped defense
Spreading my arms in deepest surrender
my lips yielded exquisite reverence, true praise
I stood revealed and naked without fear
until the coolness crept in bit by bit
and the light began to fade succumbing to
a darkness overtaking my treasured abode
I observed the flowers close against the shift
All beauty was withered and the light flickered out
No warm shadows left to dance across my heart
I stood motionless and without understanding
My Love! I cried to empty stagnant air
Will your wind whisper no more into my ear?
Silence. Dreadful silence ripped into my mind with vengeance.
All that I knew ceased to be when night overtook my woods.
I donned my cloak to protect my shivering body against the cold
But no fabric warms the frozenness within
I looked for my path-venturing so deep left me lost
My retreat now left to be sensed, not seen.
Taking a moment, I gazed with weariness
upon the roots and limbs I loved with abandon
Gasping for one more breath of the air which gave voice to my heart.
Bowing head in finality, the tears drop silently, steadily.
Endlessly.
