POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Time
I was done
Happy with what I have
No longer thinking about
What might have been
Then something changed
An invisible clock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
Counting down the seconds
Reminding me that time
Stops for no one
Better make a choice
Happy with what I have
No longer thinking about
What might have been
Then something changed
An invisible clock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
Counting down the seconds
Reminding me that time
Stops for no one
Better make a choice

My Body
Paralyzed
The stench of stale beer on his breath
I feel his weight upon me
My innocence lost
Memory a blank slate
Bruised and bloody
Trying to recall
A second margarita
Then total blackness
Can innocence be taken twice?
My body
It’s not my own
Men just take it
They use it
And toss it aside
Maybe that’s all I am
A body with no soul
The stench of stale beer on his breath
I feel his weight upon me
My innocence lost
Memory a blank slate
Bruised and bloody
Trying to recall
A second margarita
Then total blackness
Can innocence be taken twice?
My body

And toss it aside
Maybe that’s all I am
A body with no soul

Starry Sky
Starry sky
Stars in her eyes
She dreams of tomorrow
With no fear of yesterday
Brave girl
Her heart has wings

Masks
The mask
Used to disguise
Used to cover up
Used to hide the truth behind it
Elegant colors
Detailed lines
Ornate embellishments
Used to distract onlookers
So many masks
We use in daily life
Masks of happiness and control
Masks of confidence and poise
Insecurity spreads like an infection
Poisoning every corner of her mind
Causing agonizing doubt
Irrational and relentless in its plague
She adjusts her mask
Terrified someone will see
The desperate pitiful shell
Of a woman she...

The Beach
You are so stupid and naive
Slipping love notes into the suitcase of a man who is leaving you
Leaving you for a vacation with a woman he claims to hate
But proclaiming love to you as he packs
He’s doing it for his kids
You repeat those words to yourself incessantly
Willing yourself into believing its true
As passionate images of the two of them together fill your mind
You lie awake listening to the sound of your breath catching
As you weep for your own self-respect
Dying a slow, painful death
At the hands of a man who you...

To Be Touched
Behind a smile
She is tormented
Doubting herself endlessly
Suspicion has become a lonely friend
Pretty words and promises
Leave tears in her eyes
What should bring joy
Only brings more uncertainty
He moves slowly
Almost as though he knows
She is like a deer in a field
Poised to bolt at the slightest hint of danger
He is patient
Hand out-stretched
Longing to touch her
Though not in the familiar filthy ways of men
To be touched by a virtuous hand might break her
Shatter her into a million shards of glass ...

Familiar Agony
We get stuck in patterns
Making choices out of habit
Knowing the unpleasant outcome
Because we have visited this place before
The same kind of guy
The same kind of girl
The same hopes for the future
Crushed under the weight of expectation
Why do we endure such insanity?
Repeating the mistakes of the past over and over again?
Choosing people who tear us down
And eat away at our ego like parasites
So he’s not her “type”
She’s not the same woman she once was
Maybe that’s what she needs
Maybe he’s the...

Twins
My wild child
The boy that will be the source of all of my grey hair
The boy that challenges every inch of the path before him
Do not let this life extinguish your spark
Let the blaze inside your burn on
My quiet mouse
The girl who whispers her thoughts and fears
The girl who treads with careful steps through life
Do not let this world silence you
Let your voice be confident always
Two children
Born together but so very contrasting to each other
And yet they both complete me in their own way
One allows me to be wild...

Forgiveness
A word most people know but few understand
For how can you forgive what you can’t forget?
Memories are not erasable
They become a part of us
And who is more tormented?
The one begging to be forgiven
Or the one trying desperately to forgive
But falling short?
Both are their own kind of hell
The flames engulf us
And overwhelm our lungs with black smoke
Choking, gasping for air
We can save ourselves
But we don’t know how to let go
To breathe life into our souls
Please pardon my indiscretions
Allow me to be free of...

The Strongest Man I Have Ever Known
The strongest man I have ever known
Did not have super powers
Nor did he have muscles like mountains
He was just a man with a will of steel
The strongest man I have ever known
Spent months trapped in his own mind
Not understanding why no one could understand him
He had to learn how to speak again
The strongest man I have ever known
Could not use both of his hands
Though he spent many days working harder than most
He would never give up on himself
The strongest man I have ever known
Put me on a pedestal ...

The Bottle
It all began when she decanted the bottle
The sweet aroma filled her nose
As she poured herself a glass
Tiny bubbles sparkling as they danced about
The saccharine taste of fruit filled her mouth
Tantalizing her taste buds
As she drank in the sinful liquid
Welcoming the numbness that followed
Her skin warmed, tingling with every sip
Another glass and her thoughts became hazy
All inhibitions melted away
She dialed a number she should have forgotten
The midnight night sky was black as onyx
The phone rang endlessly...
The sweet aroma filled her nose
As she poured herself a glass
Tiny bubbles sparkling as they danced about
The saccharine taste of fruit filled her mouth
Tantalizing her taste buds
As she drank in the sinful liquid
Welcoming the numbness that followed
Her skin warmed, tingling with every sip

The midnight night sky was black as onyx

Someday
Long lonely nights loom ahead
Like storm clouds rolling in
The rain has not arrived but it is coming quickly
My heart pounds knowing tonight will be the last
The last kiss, the last embrace
The last backward glance for months to come
And though I have been here before
Saying goodbye has never been so agonizing
I need you now more than ever
My hands tremble as you kiss me
With a promise of tomorrow
Dancing upon my lips like a flame
And the truth in your eyes enchants me
Genuine love as tangible as ...
