POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
The gods of Bali
Mother Earth has woken
As the sun rises across the great rice terrace
A bird calls in the morning
This Java Kingfisher knows the day ahead
Light and cloud, then humidity and flight
Flight into the blue sky yonder
Hibiscus flower before the wild storm
Reminds the cobra of ying and yang
Snaking through the grasses
Back into the shade
Later when the storm subsides
And the children return to the village
After the school day,
It is time to pray once more
Then it is time
To eat, sleep and dream,
Dream of...

The mother beggar
These tears are for you
The mother beggar and child
Upon the street
of cold and hope
And I take thee
To a healer
Upon the steps
Before the great Chanandra
Chants before the
Great God Hasana
That thee life shall be restored
For hunger
NO MORE
For suffering
NO MORE
For disease
NO MORE
Pa sa la Kimora
Pa sa la vinara
Pa sa la Kimora
Pa sa la vinara
The child in the arms
Of the mother
Laying in agony
No longer
The mother beggar and child
Upon the street
of cold and hope
And I take thee
To a healer
Upon the steps
Before the great Chanandra
Chants before the
Great God Hasana
That thee life shall be restored
For hunger
NO MORE
For suffering
NO MORE
For disease
NO MORE
Pa sa la Kimora
Pa sa la vinara
Pa sa la Kimora
Pa sa la vinara
The child in the arms
Of the mother
Laying in agony
No longer

Dog
Night has come to the island
All the dogs are sleeping,
Except for one
Who has died
He lay upon the ground
Still like a rock
Frozen by time
Night has come to the island
A black sky covers
the trees,
Clouds circumnavigate
the black spaces, whilst
Birds make their final flight,
Before saying goodnight
Sunrise will come
once more to the island,
There will be light across the ocean
And music in the forest
Crickets shall sing the morning hymn
And eyes asleep
will waken to a new day
...

The ant and the elephant
Come with me to the fire dance
Where the hot earth beckons the dragon
And the cool earth lays suppressed
Even the chickens are overheated
Seeking shelter from the sun god
Let the cool breeze enter the garden
So we can sleep
Come with me to the garden of hibiscus
Beneath the coconut palm
The sun shining through the green leaf
The ant is carrying its load
Across the quiet grass
Looking for relief,
For the rain is coming to cool the valley
Soon the river will be full again
Making the waterfall flow
Come with...

Slumber time
The morning Gecko greets me
(Thank God not Gordon)
This time it's a sweet
Manifestation of the Lord,
Calling in the day
Chit-chat and clicks
Aside the sun lantern
The flowing river
And red hibiscus flower.
A white bird in the sky
An itch of mosquito
Coconut tree holding fruit
Mangosteen laying on the ground
Truly heavens door
Slumber time
(Thank God not Gordon)
This time it's a sweet
Manifestation of the Lord,
Calling in the day
Chit-chat and clicks
Aside the sun lantern
The flowing river
And red hibiscus flower.

The rock
The rock upon which
I write,
On the large face, eastwards
Chiseling out the way
Each letter in time
Three days to write the story
Of my people's
journey towards God's glory,
From sunrise to midrise
Toiling in the hot desert sun
Then unto sunset
Sweat pouring down,
Each pore a reminder
Of the great journey across the
Desert and towards God.
All that time ago at forty years,
Have I carved out God's name
In the sweat and the tears,
Upon the rock.
I write,
On the large face, eastwards
Chiseling out the way
Each letter in time
Three days to write the story
Of my people's
journey towards God's glory,
From sunrise to midrise
Toiling in the hot desert sun
Then unto sunset
Sweat pouring down,
Each pore a reminder
Of the great journey across the

All that time ago at forty years,
Have I carved out God's name
In the sweat and the tears,
Upon the rock.

Mother with child
Lays by the roadside
Cupped hand
and agony
She has no voice
Her eyes stare
Wide like saucers
They stare into soul
Suffering kneels
Tears fall from the sky
Steam rises from the volcano
Monkeys swing from trees
Baby lays with mother
Mother with child
Cupped hand
and agony
She has no voice
Her eyes stare
Wide like saucers
They stare into soul
Suffering kneels
Tears fall from the sky
Steam rises from the volcano
Monkeys swing from trees
Baby lays with mother
Mother with child

Picturing nirvana
In the fields of Bali
Amidst the humid terraces
Under a gods' eye
In the green river
And aside papaya
I fell into a slumber
A deep sleep,
Picturing Nirvana
That is when I tasted
The sweet scent of green banana pancake
Drizzled in coconut juice
And fragrance of youth
Along these terraces
I lay down,
blissfully
The next morning
When meeting the medicine man
He laughed
And said truly,
The god of luck, Barong
Was smiling upon my heart
For this I am truly grateful
Amidst the humid terraces
Under a gods' eye
In the green river
And aside papaya
I fell into a slumber
A deep sleep,
Picturing Nirvana
That is when I tasted
The sweet scent of green banana pancake
Drizzled in coconut juice
And fragrance of youth
Along these terraces
I lay down,
blissfully
The next morning
When meeting the medicine man

And said truly,

Was smiling upon my heart

A spine split
Pain shatters glass
Over cliff falls,
Blood over the rocks
Tears over,
A spine split
Over cliff falls,
Blood over the rocks
Tears over,
A spine split

The death
O Lord, death has come
It flows in red blood
Like a river to the sea
All our hearts are saddened, for
We are death
These souls taken
Injured by humanity
Tortured by us
Beaten by madness,
Over and over, for
We are death
A salt sea
It bitters and disgusts
Leaves repugnance
And we drown in it, for
We are death
Night and stars
Cannot save the dead
That the hand took
Took from life
Black has covered the earth
Air has been sucked away
The flower has...

Injured by humanity
Tortured by us

Over and over, for

A salt sea

Apocalypse
Today is a sad day
Children have been
slaughtered
Their parents in grief
We cause our own
Apocalypse
We curl into our own
Dilemmas
We cause our own
Suffering
Tomorrow the sun will shine
Yet our hearts are emptier
Children have been
slaughtered
Their parents in grief
We cause our own
Apocalypse
We curl into our own
Dilemmas
We cause our own
Suffering
Tomorrow the sun will shine
Yet our hearts are emptier
