living the dream
working away is easy;
get up
drive to the job site
work sun-up to after sun-down
come home to the farmstay
cuddle the dog
eat dinner
read on my bed
fall asleep
get up in the morning
do it all again
the dreams though
the fucking dreams about wasting a life
miles from the sea
woke up late last night
doing maths in my head;
number of years left to live
and years left of life
(two different numbers
if you see what I mean)
the way I do my drinking and smoking ...

Tony's run
Tony was born in ’25
did forty years as a lawyer
retired twenty years ago
in his own words
“filthy rich”
spent ten years after that
bay-hopping around the Pacific rim
in a great palace of a boat
then came home
to live close to his grand kids
you have to admit
that’s a pretty good run at living
last night
about four in the morning
he sat up out of his hospital bed
needing a shit
and holding onto his shits
has been a bit of a problem
which is how he came
to be in here
pressed the...

lesson learned
not saying I’m the only man who ever made a mistake
but I’m the only one I can talk about truly
so
I made a mistake
treated another human being
like 5 years living under the same roof
meant nothing
walked away holding ashes
and left anger in her chest
can say it's changed me
not so fucking sure I am the legend
seems like I might be just human
and it's made me feel a little beat
thinking I must be what everyone ever said I was...

run son
been running forever
used to cut out of home while still in nappies
make a run for it
would come back hungry tired
with secrets in my eyes
got so that mum wouldn't come looking
knew I'd find her
by the time I was 8 I was packing for overnighters
once walked miles up a creek bed
found an abandoned house
hidden in bush
full of wasps nests
with stairs that led to a room
crammed full of old newspapers
yellowed and dry
read them for hours
the room smelled like the forest
that was eating it

blood zen
hospital bed
night time
sleeping badly
wake in the dark
not sure what hour it is
lay still
listen
snoring
occasional door slams from the corridor
the machines hooked up to me
blinking sighing
press the buzzer
nurse comes
gives morphine
checks my lines like servicing a machine
she smells of anticeptic handwash
looks tired
writes in my notes
takes my piss bottle away
I lie
look along the hose coming out my guts
watch my blood drain through it
into a...

gut feel
I’ve never been under the knife before
had my share of bone-breaks and all the rest
but never laid my life in the hands of strangers
to be opened up
then last week my guts got ideas of mutiny
and went septic on me
I tried to walk it off
tried to vomit it away
tried to shit it out
knew when I couldn’t even push enough to lay one
that it was probably time
to call in the pros
packed a bag
toothbrush/phone/books
drove myself to the...

my dog Marshall
It's none of your business
but I’ve got a mate;
Marshall the stocky black farm dog
low-slung wide-headed smiling fool
abandoned on the side of the road when he was a pup
found
kept
left again
ended up staying on a farm
his latest owner paying his keep
but not here to give him
what dogs really need
then I moved in
staying for work
met him
fell in love with the bastard
like the way he leans in when I’m reading
the love-eyes he gives me when he’s cold
like when he comes to me ...

they were right
someone once wrote
that a poet has nothing to say
he says it
and that’s poetry
there is one pen on my desk
that means nothing to anyone
but the people I love
there were a thousand of them made
for my nephew
when he was 16 and dying
to help buy him a new computer
so he could talk to his friends
from his hospital grave
(they tell you
that a patient's mental state
matters
during treatment
and you tie your hope to that)
we sold all the pens
he got...

lesson 1
I don’t mind the young French bloke staying at the farm right now
don’t really like the French in general
the cheese eating cunts
but he’s not a bad one
has got a good mind
getting the hang of how to work the land
loves his new farmer's beard
can see him getting into his muscles being worked every day
and he’s not bad with the dogs;
gives them the love and the hard words they need
then last week he decides to buy a van
reckons he needs a camper like every other backpacker in Australia
gonna finish up on...

shit, shower, shave
In the mornings, on weekdays, when the clock sings that usual ugly song, I lay and breathe, the winter days cold and quiet, the sun not raised a lid; never seems as interested as me in the alarm.
I rise in a burst of movement, out of my warm cell of blankets, like to explode into the day with a growl “get up, motherfucker”, then lay out my work gear on the bed; keys, smokes, phone, lighter, belt, socks, jeans, shirt.
I take a towel and walk out my balcony door, take a quick look at the weather, swear again if it’s raining, ‘cos there is no money running heavy...

right man for the job
there is a violence to this work
in tearing the earth
in shaping the land to look like a set of drawings
can see it in the men
that same violence
can feel it in me
the blind rush to create
paid to let nothing stop us
weather
broken gear
whatever the fuck-up
you can bet we’ll be back tomorrow
to do it all again
young bloke comes in my office last night
know he’s been having troubles at home
his missus not happy with his 12 days away

bring me the axe
bought a new axe last Friday night
good timber handle and mid-weight head
took it to the shed and ran the bastard-file over it
until it had an edge I liked
went out to the woodpile Saturday afternoon
put my shoulders to the work
been 20 years since I swung an axe in anger
came back to me easy
my hands far apart on the handle
start the fast swing to speed the head
then open the swing out as it comes over my shoulder
right hand slipping back down the handle to touch the other
slam the head through the timber with a...
