POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Sadness as a Color
She wore sadness as a color
Those who knew her, knew her mother
With dark shades from long ago
Etching stories around her eyes
With dark endings, no surprise
She’s just stuck in a time long ago
Somewhere in the streets
Just as they fall asleep
Under the rain of all her falling pain
She searches for lost ghost
All her demons she keeps close
And only answer when calling them by name
Maybe somewhere in the hills
Where the gypsies give her pills
She can find the perfect shade of black
As she rolls into...

Warm Tones
Tomorrow dies alone
Absent of today’s warm tones
lost the love held hands
Between a sunrise and sunset
Gone the days’ work
Laughter from long ago
Albums with blank faces
Only yesterday holds dear
With a faint breath of faith
Tomorrow will slip by
Back into today
With all its warm tones
Absent of today’s warm tones
lost the love held hands
Between a sunrise and sunset
Gone the days’ work
Laughter from long ago

Tomorrow will slip by

Teardrops Cold
Somewhere in his crimson death
There was one last whisper
One faint breath
As teardrops cold lay to rest
His one last whisper
His one last breath
He chose the season to which to live
He chose winter
He chose sin
Now teardrops cold lay to rest
His one last whisper
His one last breath
There’s nothing more lonely
Then the sound
Then the morning rain
That’s coming down
Then being forgotten
Before you’re gone
But the light he shined
Shined brightest when

Hard Times
Where do all the hard times go
When they are hard to remember
Do they fade in Winter’s cold
Or to Heaven’s sweet surrender
And sometimes when I miss their kicks
Their bruises played in songs
Flashbacks inked without a future
To that place where I belonged
I’ll have a silent cry to a lullaby
To the hard times that I let go
With all its pain and utter shame
Now for Heaven to only know
When they are hard to remember
Do they fade in Winter’s cold
Or to Heaven’s sweet surrender
And sometimes when I miss their kicks
Their bruises played in songs
Flashbacks inked without a future
To that place where I belonged
I’ll have a silent cry to a lullaby
To the hard times that I let go
With all its pain and utter shame
Now for Heaven to only know

Buoy Bell
They were framed by the fog
And etched into the windows
Their faces hung like portraits
Just floating in cigarette smoke
With murmurs of a better time
Retold on whiskey breath
Dulled by the sound of the buoy bells
That warn strollers to steer clear
Of the smoky shores of empty regret
If Hell were to have a gathering place
It would be at the end of the buoy bell
Just beneath the most Northern star
And etched into the windows
Their faces hung like portraits
Just floating in cigarette smoke
With murmurs of a better time
Retold on whiskey breath
Dulled by the sound of the buoy bells
That warn strollers to steer clear
Of the smoky shores of empty regret
If Hell were to have a gathering place

Better Me
Catch me when I am gone
Just a picture on the shelf
Faded by the sun I couldn’t bring
With shades of my better self
Know me when I’m forgotten
When my truth is no longer real
Buried inside the blackthorn vines
That prevents your want to feel
If at times, my better me
Whirls a hum inside your heart
Hold my hand in the blackthorn vines
To remember what tore us apart
And if drops of fallen angel blood
Rain from clouds at Heaven’s floor
It’s a reminder from the grave
Of all the hurt I did before
Just a picture on the shelf
Faded by the sun I couldn’t bring
With shades of my better self
Know me when I’m forgotten
When my truth is no longer real
Buried inside the blackthorn vines
That prevents your want to feel
If at times, my better me

Hand Surfing
I want to go hand surfing
Let the needle land with the perfect roll
Watch my hand come and go
To the melody of my thoughts
And to words of a song I can’t recall
Skimming through waves of air
Down unnamed roads
To an end that will come too soon
I want to go hand surfing
Let the needle land with the perfect roll
Watch my hand come and go
To the melody of my thoughts
And to words of a song I can’t recall
Skimming through waves of air
Down unnamed roads
To an end that will come too soon
I want to go hand surfing

Johnnie Fox's
They all came a calling
At the crossroads of Glencullen
Where the boys bunked off Sunday mass
Eddie was the barman
Preacher, singer, showman
At Fox’s Chapel of the Sunday lash
No, tomorrow to fear
It’s not welcome up here
In the highest part of the town
But the garda won’t mind
Because it’s a hard place to find
At Fox’s Chapel of the Sunday lash
Eddie’s shouts of last call
Brought moans from them all
As tomorrow reared its ugly head
Then they all left a falling
At the crossroads of Glencullen

Brittlebush
I walked along clouds of brittlebush
With coyotes hanging out in corners
Just where the canyon narrows
And still high from yesterday’s moon
They serenade for the sun to drop out
Thirsty for what the brittlebush will leave behind
There’s so much distress in the creep of the nighttide
Unguarded from nature’s lawlessness to fully enjoy
And soon the silver-blue flowers of the brittlebush
Will watch good collide with evil
At the thin line that splits day to night
For now I will applaud the desert for its beauty

Shadow Puppet
Just let the chord fade
It won’t play here anymore
He’s just a shadow puppet
Out of tune with who he was before
Busy plucking on his strings
Forgetting the words that he sings
Doesn’t even care they spelled his name wrong
But that’s his song
And it’s been that way for way too long
The shadow puppet plays all the covers
But he will not play his own
Wears sunglasses to keep the crowd out
Can only sing when he’s alone
Fell in love with a day drinking broad
Who use to follow him on the road
She reminds...

One More Try
I look into the mirror
And I hate what i see
I’d smash it to a million pieces
But then there’d be a million me’s
I hate my ugly mouth
With my stupid little grin
Spitting all my big shot lies
To strangers who aren’t my friends
I hate the weight of cold
That pins me in my bed
Numbing all my thoughts
Bringing winter to my head
I hate when you comfort me
And caress away all my pain
Stop bringing pieces of peace to me
Shooting antitoxins inside my veins
Hating myself I’m...

Skinned Knees
I have skinned my knees
Chasing a million dreams
I have tripped on so much doubt
and it laughs at me or so it seems
As it whispers all my faults
And does a two step with my pride
It has left me at the dance
And enjoyed it when I cried
But with each trip there’s been a hand
That’s lifted me from the shame
And put a dream back in my pocket
And gave some hope within the pain
Maybe I am just a fool
Or maybe I like skinned knees
But chasing a million dreams
