Dating is Dated (or should be)
Much like kindergarten
prepares children for childhood
the 1950s model of dating
prepared young men and women for their adult roles.
In the old days
the man was the provider
so he paid on dates.
The woman took great care with her appearance,
a crucial part of her role.
Sometimes the man ordered for the woman in restaurants
without even consulting her.
I wouldn't have survived.
"The lady will have the salmon"
"Eww! I will not. I HATE fish!"
That would have...

He Has a Book in Him
He has a book in him
Must be kind of uncomfortable.
The book in him
will likely never be expelled
In phantom form it duels with your nearly finished work
excising it cleanly away
He simply has no interest
in what you write.
He has a book in him.
He has a book in him
Your book does not exist
Neither do you, really
Your purpose is to listen to him talk
About the book in him.
Must be kind of uncomfortable.

Look a roacho
it must be Miami!
teeming with humanity
cut with a knife humidity
Miami it must be

Mama Mia!

In the canals the dead goats float
Out in the bay
on any given day
square grouper are afloat
See them from your speeding boat
A penthouse on Brickell Ave
Big bucks you must have
or else it's Kendall Drive for you
Yikes, that's me! what can I do?
Oh, neato

1. Why is space so incredibly vast? Is it just a mall with billions of empty stores? I mean, really, what's it being used for?
2. Would quitting my job be cowardly or brave?
3. How is it possible that so many Americans support Trump?

5. Where can I move that's not all guns, Trump, and Jesus?
6. How am I going to find the motivation to go on a diet? I don't want to break up with food.

The Net
Majestically spanning San Francisco and Sausalito
stands one of the world's most famous landmarks
and one of the world's most utilized final stops
Who are these infrequent flyers?
These sad and lonely diers?
Students
Teachers (believe me, I get it)
the jilted, the lonely, the ill
so many reasons
always one less
than reasons to live
Recently, a safety net was added
285 feet in the sky
Taxpayers are arguing about it
It's a concept they just don't get
calling it a waste of their money
to save just...

List Number Something: Words I Hate
1. Cremains. Please save such sporty word fusions for the likes of 'J Lo' or ;bronde' not what is leftover from the immolation of an adored one. Additionally, cremains sounds like macaroni. Wasn't there a brand
of macaroni called creamettes? No to "creamins". A thousand times no.
2. Moist. Yeah, I know. You hate it too. Let's form a Moist Haters club.
3. Classy: If you call yourself classy, you're not.
4. Spendy. Tacky way of saying expensive
5. Supper. Don't ask me why. Unless it's a light evening meal taking...

Passing the Crown
The cool cities
have lost it
Seattle is septic
Portland is paunchy
Denver has dementia
Miami is myopic
Honolulu has a hernia
Phoenix is phucked up
Once homecoming kings and queens
now unfixable with plastic surgery alone
they reminisce about the old days
Soon they'll be startled to find
the uncool kids they teased
wearing the crowns:
Cincinatti
Pittsburgh
Bismark
Not because those cities were born all that
but because of what they are not
Yet.

Conjugating
Just past the Bank of America
and the ski shop (odd in Phoenix)
there's a place that kills pets
and charges you thousands of dollars to do it.
They won't kill your pet right away.
First they'll do what they can
Exams
X-rays
Even clipping your cat's nails
because she hates having that done
but now that's she's half dead
she can tolerate it.
You drove her there
in rush hour traffic
crying the whole way
Why did you stay after school to grade papers?
Why did you stop at Safeway after that? ...

The NO Sign
Tired
is telling yourself no
but knowing you have to say yes
and so you carry on
Exhausted
is hearing the word NO
screaming at you
but turning down the volume
carrying on your duties
ignoring the shouting
though you hear it
every minute
of every day
Beyond exhausted
is tripping over the word NO
bruising yourself all over
getting up,
carrying on your daily routine
Running head first
into the NO sign
as it smashes you in the face
breaking your nose
and bloodying your mouth ...
is telling yourself no
