POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I have been writing poetry for about 15 years. Most of my poems express my inner feelings and emotions, and are an intimate baring of my soul, although I write some of a more humourous nature.
Springtime In Paris
We first met entirely by accident
On a lovely bright sunny day in Spring,
It was the first of May as I recall;
Even now I remember it clearly,
Although almost four decades have passed by.
Strolling along the Boulevard Haussmann,
Just outside the Magasin au Printemps.
I wasn't looking where I was going,
Daydreaming as usual, distracted
By the pretty girls selling their bunches
Of lily of the valley, their sweet scent
Evoking pleasant thoughts of past amours
And rich with the promise of future joys
In the arms of a beautiful...

A Soldier's Memory
He lay stretched out on the narrow iron framed bed
Idly staring at the cracked and blotchy ceiling,
Its surface resembling a map of no man's land,
A senseless wilderness of craters and barbed wire.
Unthinking, his mind was empty of all feeling
Other than a sense of utter futility,
A weariness that had seeped into his marrow
Like the water bleeding from the walls of the trench
Whose narrow confines had become his entire world,
A place of despair, stealing the light from his soul.
He lit a Woodbine, and watched the skeins of blue smoke
Drifting...

Redemptive Love
Almost ethereal in hue, your tiny blooms
Hide shyly in the grass like small fragments of sky,
Whispering of better places and kinder ways,
A happy land revealed only to true lovers.
Where love reigns supreme and fear and pain are unknown.
In better days we have travelled there together,
Walking hand in hand on verdant dew dropped meadows,
Leaving a trail of silver where our feet have trod,
Far removed from daily chores and sad memories,
Our hearts and minds united in transcendent love.
There we pledged our eternal love, and exchanged vows
Never more...

The River
People have many different ways to find peace
When living is just becoming too hard to bear,
For some it is in sleep, some have a special place,
Others seek the company of lighthearted friends,
Some settle down with a book, others meditate,
And many spoil themselves with a favourite food.
I have a special place where I like to escape
For a few days whenever it is possible,
Where there is such quietness and tranquility
That my mind is emptied of negative feelings
And I rediscover the lightness of being
That I had forgotten in the bustle of life.

The Pool
It was a day just like today I remember,
Unseasonably mild for late in October;
The trees were still apparelled in splendid colours,
The shades of autumn, oranges and reds, rich browns,
And brilliant gold, a last defiant display,
Before winter took away their summer glory,
To leave them naked, stark against the horizon,
Or shrouded mysteriously in foggy gloom;
Only the sparkle of hoar frost on their branches
Or the first snowfall would grace them with new beauty,
On rare days of cold sunshine and clear azure skies.
The sky was a limpid blue, and...

Losing You
I truly don't know how it came about,
But I feel that you are slipping away;
Where there was certainty now there is doubt,
And sadly I ask where things went astray.
My aching heart is full of unnamed fears,
And I dread to learn the unvarnished truth,
Because I know that all will end in tears,
That even time will be unable to sooth.
But perhaps my misgivings are groundless,
Merely unreal phantasms sent to torment
By the demons that have sought to possess
My soul; pain and anguish their dark intent.
Oh my soul’s dear twin, and my closest friend...

Home At Last
At last I am home after months away,
Long months that at times have seemed more like years,
When home and comfort were just a mirage;
Hard months living out of an old rucksack,
Battered and worn after years on the road,
Much like me I suppose, old and worn out.
As an aid worker for a charity,
I thought I had seen it all, South Sudan,
The West Bank and Gaza Strip, Lebanon,
So many places, so much suffering,
Faces prematurely aged, all the pain
And hopelessness of those driven from home
By famine, war, persecution and fear, ...

Memories of an Affair
Ah devastation! Banished from your side,
Memories are all that remain of our love,
And I am left like a child in the rain
Cold and alone, peering through misted panes,
Craving a glimpse of the light and life within,
Longing for the warmth of love, but all in vain.
Forgotten now is the laughter in your voice,
The touch of your hand, the image of your face,
The swell of your soft breasts beneath your blouse,
Warm and tender beneath my questing touch.
And below the gentle curve of your belly
There lay that enchanted forest, warm and dark,
Where so...
