It sits motionless in this drought,
Like a predator awaiting its prey.
A decaying, decrepit, chasm of darkness.
Luring me; seducing me; beguiling me;
Taking its prisoner with unseen shackles.

It’s then that I find myself at the feet of a stair set,
Intimidated by the steps that may lead to an awakening.
It commands that I enter,
Leaving me no choice but to obey.

The stairs alternate beneath my feet,
My body moving like a shell without its snail.
It listens not to my restraint.
The lamenting wood beneath me moans.
