POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I guess I write poems.
Dearest Friend,
Please remember to be gentle with yourself.
You are made up of billions of years and your
Molecules match stardust.
Even when you stumble, you are going somewhere.
Don’t be afraid to let your heart break,
Like any muscle, the burn hurts with a certain
Satisfaction—maybe it’s the knowledge that
You’re getting stronger.
Rip your thoughts asunder, darling
Each and every day.
Open your brain so wide, that you think an entire universe might

Going Away to College (A Series of Poems)
Packing
Pack your heart up in a box
Label it “memories” and think
Of a few of your favorite things
Crying
Every tear drop holds a rainbow
If you remember to let light shine
Family
A redwood forest holds trees so big
You think they must touch some kind of heaven
And everything smells like rain
Soaking up the same nutrients
Each growing to be beautiful and different
Going Away to College
It’s just a new set of training wheels
But don’t be afraid of losing a tire along the way...

I do
Till death do us part
the scars on your heart will remain
from when we thought this was destiny
and we made the mistake of sleeping with
someone who was even more insane

and we made the mistake of sleeping with

Make Me Your Scrapbook
Bind me with yarn
make me a scrapbook
carry all your memories
and mistakes between my pages
Tape pictures of your prom
and scrawl over them with the story
of your very first kiss
and wrinkle my paper
with your tears when you
weep over the very last
Threaten to make me burst
from all the life you have
stuffed inside of me
Let me grow dusty
from disuse
while you make more memories
to look back on in old age
of those crazy times of youth
make me a scrapbook
carry all your memories
and mistakes between my pages
Tape pictures of your prom
and scrawl over them with the story
of your very first kiss
and wrinkle my paper
with your tears when you
weep over the very last
Threaten to make me burst
from all the life you have
stuffed inside of me
Let me grow dusty
from disuse
while you make more memories
to look back on in old age
of those crazy times of youth

Elaborating on The Offspring's song "Want You Bad"
I want to nestle in the darkest corner of your mind,
curl against your side and feel your heart beat with passion and rage
I want to tromp through the woods with you,
chase down transcendental enlightenment while risking poison ivy
I want to start a riot at your peace rally,
so we get thrown in jail and fuck
Let me feel the sandpaper of your callouses
Let me add yours to mine.
curl against your side and feel your heart beat with passion and rage
I want to tromp through the woods with you,
chase down transcendental enlightenment while risking poison ivy
I want to start a riot at your peace rally,

The Proposal
She cracks her gum
looks down at her shoes
and smiles.

You Are
You are constellations made from fireflies,
Folded pages and underlined phrases
in my favorite book,
You are coffee and cream,
My awakening.

in my favorite book,
You are coffee and cream,
My awakening.

He was a dandelion
with the soul of an oak
and I carved my initials into him
forgetting the necessity
of gentleness

Rheumatoid
I wonder if you're there
lurking in my veins
waiting to attack me from the inside out
to betray me with myself
and gnarl my fingers in your game

to betray me with myself
and gnarl my fingers in your game

To Fathers of Disillusioned Girls,
your breath is mustard gas
and the spit that spews from your mouth melts her skin like napalm fire
the vein in your neck that bulges as you quietly drip poison into her veins
looks like a venomous snake crawling beneath your razor-burned skin.
your words dance across her wrists
she takes a daily dose with her prescription meds
and drinks them with her booze
each trip she takes is a failed attempt to get away from you.
your fists brand her face like a horse’s ass
that dent in the wall is from when...

More Than Your Fear
be gentle darling,
your mind is as deep and dangerous as the universe,
the chemicals in your brain create an emotional asteroid belt,
but don’t fear yourself, darling
--the universe was meant to be explored

Sickness
I supsect what really got you sick
was loneliness
Its hands wrapped around your lungs and squeezed so tight
you couldn't fight; you couldn't breath
you coughed and hacked your way to oxygen
Its claws tore at your thinning skin so fiercely
a Band-Aid and some Bactine couldn't fix it
a marring red that migrated with your fever
It clenched your stomach and ripped your innards out
you curled on the couch and sighed
misery making misery worse
I suspect what really got you sick
wasn't strep throat or penicillin
but...
