Since childhood
one event has brightened
every New Years Day
a glorious morning parade
from traditionally sunny
Pasadena, California relayed
watched in robe, slippers, and p-jays
the Tournament of Roses
heralding a championship college Football game
rarely watched by my kin
unless dad’s school was playing therein
Unlike the more commercial NYC
cartoon ballooned cavalcade
marched on Thanksgiving day
that’s become one big advertisement
for the latest plays on Broadway
the variegated, festive floats

First and favorite cousin, French Horn
with cupped hand in bell inserted
creates beautiful, majestic tones
evoking lofty thoughts
Images of towering, alpine places
aerial views of nature’s magnificence,
expansive castled estates,
mother earth observed from space
Family counselor is the Conductor
sauntering on stage

Harmonious Family Dynamic - Fifth Movement
Corpulent, bi polar uncle Tuba
at once jolly
playing oom-pah-pah, oom-pah-pah
then blows a tempestuous, thunderous blast
slightly less bombastic
and certainly more mobile
is smaller cousin Sousaphone
Fun loving brother Trombone
slip sliding through the measures
plays explosions of happy playful tones
but still can blow a gale
while brother trumpet
commands one’s full attention
whether demonstrating military might
or extemporaneous Jazz inventions

harbinger of excitement or the end
whereas, unruly little brother Cymbals
races crashing through the house

adds layers of rich baritonal notes
despite relative anonymity
when compared with other,
more distinguished,
members of the orchestral family tree
Clarinet is the cool brother
with a dichotomy of career paths
either playing with the orchestra clan
or riffing with a Jazz combo
and if passed over for first chair
at rehearsal they may not show

keeping the family in tune

confectioner of sweet musical treats
evoking loving memories
like grandma’s serene smile
a baby resting in her lap

Private Property - Neuroscape Study II
In each of the numberless cerebral ecosystems exist
dark forests choked with thick undergrowth
wherein dwell monsters of fear and anxiety
some genuine, most imagined
or cruelly fabricated
by mongers of baseless, xenophobic trepidation
Whole continents of placid meadowlands
giving place for love, happiness, peace, and germination of kind impulses
gardens replete with flourishing fond memories
but be wary of deceptive peat bogs,
mires of counterfeit euphoria
born of suffocating, deleterious addictive behaviors.

be an astute outlier
unglue your gaze from smart-phone display

The magnetic sign
on the dishwasher reads,
“sparkly clean”
opening the door
I expect to see cups, knives,
forks, spoons, and dishes
lined up, standing at attention
like spit and polished soldiers
waiting to rest
at ease in their kitchen cabinet barracks
to my immense surprise
there’s been a security breach
the dishwasher is empty
one of my computer savvy posterity
hacked into the domestic database,
stole my single-user appliance entry code
and voluntarily did a chore
to tell you the truth

to every inhabitant
