Do Words Get Stage Fright?
sometimes
I think there's too much pressure
put on the words to come out right
words shouldn't be perfect
they are a tool
they are as flawed as the person who says them
and yet maybe that's why we rehearse speeches
in the dead of night in front of mirrors
pretending we have something important to say
when really we're just reciting pointless information
how we'll say hello
how we'll say goodbye
how we'll pretend not to have the flaws we do
because if we can make our words perfect then maybe
just maybe by extension
we...

Just A Word
It's just a word,
they say it's just a word.
It's just a word
but each syllable is followed
by a blow that hurts
just as bad as it did
when it was accompanied by fists
because it was just a word
and it didn't hurt enough.
It's just a word
but it may as well be a name
a label
because that's all they see
to them you are just a word
and you should be grateful
that they are only using their words this time.
And you shouldn't complain
because it's just a word
and words can't hurt
until...
they say it's just a word.

Fear
terrifying
there's so many things you're afraid of
nightmares, heights, the ocean
there's so much to fear
so much to worry over
so much to avoid
the dark, failure, spiders, drunks
it's all terrifying
the edges of buildings, sharp objects, pills
but of all the things you're afraid of
of all the things that scare you
doctors, large crowds, mirrors
this should not be one of them
you should not be afraid of
her

It's Supposed to Be Romantic
there's this idea
that suicide is romantic
I don't think so
but what would I know?
I never loved anyone properly anyway
maybe it is
maybe there's something beautiful in it
in the tears and snot that drips down your face
as you clutch a bottle of pills to your chest
begging to someone, anyone
that you get up the courage to open it
and down them all
nobody checks your room
nobody wakes you up in the morning
they wouldn't notice until you were stone cold
you could do it
but you can't
everyone...

Little Soldier
The ozone filled our lungs
The air toxic yet impossible to breath without
City lights reflected in our eyes
Mixing with stars long since faded
A haze of madness settled on empty streets
As we cursed the world
A pox for it's folly to bear us into it
Welcome little soldier
It should have known better
It should have known better
And it's unfairness
Life worn hands and lines too old for young faces
We should have tried harder
We should have tried harder
We broke ourselves
Fight little soldier
Your battle is here ...
The air toxic yet impossible to breath without
City lights reflected in our eyes
Mixing with stars long since faded
A haze of madness settled on empty streets
As we cursed the world
A pox for it's folly to bear us into it
Welcome little soldier
It should have known better

The Moon
this a poem for the moon
for the moon
who shines brighter than any star ever could
ever wise
ever steadfast
ever wonderful
for the moon
who comes and goes
and when the light is gone
your world is dark again
but somehow less daunting
for the moon
whose presence can calm
the storm that rages inside you
constant, constant
the sea in your veins silent
for the moon
who can ground you and guide you home
you've nothing to fear from the darkness
nothing to fear from your depths ...
for the moon
who shines brighter than any star ever could
ever wise
ever steadfast
ever wonderful
for the moon

Almost
it's almost like fingers running down your sides
almost but not quite
it's almost like fingers in your hair
comforting and kind
calming and gentle caresses that hold you close
almost but not quite
it's almost like a laugh that rings bright
so bright and so loud that it hurts your ears
like bells
church bells or wedding bells or maybe chimes
no, that's it
it's a laugh like wind chimes in the summer breeze
and for a second you aren't alone
almost but not quite
it's almost like falling asleep after a long day
or reading...
