POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Expressing myself in words is one of my most valuable skills.
How I Know
I’m not nervous in the least,
No fear that I’m not good enough
For demands that I can’t meet,
No over-whelming need to prove myself,
No pretense I should keep,
No anxiety--
I’m not stressed about the details,
Rushing to make plans, over-excitedly,
No expectations that I’ll fail,
I’m not questioning what’s right for me,
That’s how I know you’re leading me.
I’m not worried what they’ll see,
I don’t have doubts about my capabilities,
No pride that thwarts my humility,
Only peace--
I don’t feel the need to excuse...
No fear that I’m not good enough

In All Of My Redemption
I always feel as if I’m losing it,
Walking through the wilderness.
The minute I realize I’m in it,
I could swear my trial and error
as the only path I’ve ever known,
That I'm forgotten and alone.
But if I did I would be lying,
That’s not the case,
It’s just not so.
In all of my redemption, I was never on my own.
In the pit when I fell into it,
Temporarily despaired, bewildered, and dismayed,
The instant I let chaos start convincing me its claims,
I got caught up debating what is right, and wrong, and gray.
I was...

You Called Me Out By Name
When I don’t know what to do,
When I’ve exhausted every avenue;
I know that I can rest in you.
When the world is overwhelming with demands,
When the obstacles seem impossible to withstand;
I know that I can put it in your hands.
When I’ve lost my way,
When doubt and rage creep up to take their place,
When I’m afraid;
I know that it will calm in your embrace.
When decisions are opinion based,
When I am defined by my mistakes,
When I am spent;
I know that you will stand in my defense.

Remind Me Who I Am
Every morning
When I rise
Remind me who I am,
When new light
comes pouring in,
Don’t let me forget,
Before my feet can touch the ground,
Remind me of my crown,
Stay with me throughout the day,
Whatever task at hand,
Speak to me in subtle ways,
That I can comprehend,
As confidant and friend,
Never let it slip my mind,
The price that you have paid,
When I face the trials
that tempt me from your ways,
I will boast of how I know
To count it all as joy,
For rest assured the war is won,...

Picnics and Zoo Trips
Today I saw a picture,
It reminded me of past adventures,
Fun times with sun shine,
Under blue skies,
On a train ride
Together.
I remember,
All was right back then,
Happy kids,
Sitting at a station,
Smiles across their little faces,
While they waited with elation.
Arms stretched wide enough to fit
All three of them,
Looked upon with pride,
Equally, from gleaming eyes.
I remember when,
Before the sadness hit,
Before the damage,
Before we knew how good we really had it,

Casting Shadows on Lament
Just on the horizon,
As we were driving home,
The setting sun dividing
What was and is to come.
You were apologizing,
Again, for long-past wrongs,
Instead of begging, compromising,
Justifying hurt that was endured,
This time it came as a reminder,
Gently meant to reassure,
New attributes you have acquired,
Evidence you now adorn,
You said,
"Look me in the eyes",
Sternly requested I move on.
For miles it kept its beams ablaze,
Glaring through the window,
So severely searing rays,
It left everything...

Hazelnut Calamity
The smell of coffee brewing at three,
A fragrance of apathy,
Nights like these,
When I really need the sleep,
I’m up mixing thoughts with sugar and cream,
Hazelnut calamity—
The sound of the clock tick-tocking the hour,
Four AM, mocking hands have devoured,
Mornings like this,
When I really need some bliss,
I sit battling my worth in analogy,
Paper and pen reality—
My mind is my enemy,
Constantly questioning blame and finality,
Consistently thwarting my value,
Times like these,
When I need relief, ...

If Not For You
I don’t have time to settle in,
All these matters pressing me again,
Spoken, broken, scattered to the wind,
I would be consumed, if not for you.
A hundred directions at my feet,
I never know where they will take me,
Guessing is the best that I could do,
I would be lost without you.
There are trials that I have yet to overcome,
Mountains that I cannot climb alone,
For the broken heart that yearns but can’t let go,
You are the only strength I know.
Through the fire, reduced to soot and bones,
You are the refiner,...

Nice to Meet You
When you met me, I left an impression,
We all do, I’m guessing.
All I’m asking is that you consider,
How perception can be blind and bitter,
Conditioned to bias and trend,
Hindered by violence and sin,
Perspective is knowledge and vision,
One we control, the other’s an image.
Maybe you thought that you knew,
Who I am, at a glance, from a view,
Information you gathered, assumed,
Sadly, you don’t have a clue.
History, internet, news,
Media, socials and groups,
Factions, labels and limits,
Selections of past or...

Determined
That dream I had,
steering off the street,
stern faced and gritting teeth,
swerving silently,
blue sky and golden wheat –
What does that even mean?
Same dream, second act,
winding up a mountain
on a narrow beaten path,
moving fast,
curving as the earth falls to the clouds –
That has to be profound.
This is how it ended,
in the air, with questions pending,
Did inertia keep me spinning?
Was it gravity and...

Aftermath of a Catastrophe
In a tragedy,
Survival is one thing,
Mending is another.
In recovery,
Learning to forgive myself and others,
I’ve discovered,
I am capable of more than I imagined,
Far more than I could fathom.
In the aftermath of a catastrophe,
Surprisingly,
I am finding my own strength,
Realizing that
I am stronger than you think.

Riding on the fence
Pretty painted pictures in my head,
Don’t you know the price you pay for entertaining pretty things?
Everything reminds me --
Brazen green and blazing red,
Vivid hues of swirling blues,
Gold on the horizon lights the day until it sets.
At night, you never wonder if one star outshines the next.
There is no time to stop and wallow,
in confines of grief and sorrow,
or regrets –
None of those can stop tomorrow.
I’ll confess –
Every day is one more further from the rest.
The pictures aren’t the same,
Don’t you know...
