POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
At the Nativity
I spoke quite softly then to Miriam,
but she was crying out against
her labour pains.
And so she took no note
of what I, her husband, said,
though it was couched in love.
She only heard the gilded choruses
of angels singing high above our heads
and all the hillside echoes
of their “fear not” filled refrains.
but she was crying out against
her labour pains.
And so she took no note
of what I, her husband, said,
though it was couched in love.
She only heard the gilded choruses
of angels singing high above our heads
and all the hillside echoes
of their “fear not” filled refrains.

Hope
Shall I go out again
on Christmas eve
to stand upon the nearby hill
and pray to hear what once occurred
near Bethlehem
occur once more:
a host of heaven’s messengers
in purposed travel from afar
intent to breach the barrier
between the starry realm above
and all the bonds of earth
sing chorused wonders to the world
of God’s redemptive love?
I’ve trod this way before
when I was young
(and several times since then)
and fervently looked up,
so locked in hope
to see a gloried...

A Man You Ought to Love
The Buddha’s known
as “the compassionate”.
But why?
For this::
Not only did he see
with overwhelming empathy
Man’s dire need to be
released from fated suffering
but kindly taught “him” how
this could be done
successfully.
and thereby caused
his being praised,
extolled, and justly so,
by high and low
as one
who was (and is)
deserving to be loved.
as “the compassionate”.

Strength
I wonder if it’s true
that thoughtful persons are surprised
when seeing that
the nature of a brawny man
is kindliness.
I think they know, surmise,
what’s plainly evident
to anyone who's wise
that having muscles
does not circumvent
possession of
the kind of heart
that is from birth disposed
intent
to show the weak
benignity, benevolence.

Work's Fatherings
Is it not a fact, my boy
it’s all too often true
that what hard toil
is really wont to father in
a person’s body and
his mind,
his spirit too
is just the opposite
of joy.
It’s actually much misery and woe
fatigue of soul,
the diminution
of one’s strength,
vitality,
one’s loss of wit
and will to carry on with life
and so much so
that what one almost always seeks
when under travail’s lash
for long
is somehow being freed of it.

Heart's Tears?
Our Joseph says,
but not to my surprise,
his heart sheds tears.
I cannot think he’s right
because as my good doctor and
my textbooks on anatomy
and physiology proclaim
with some authority
this fluid is contained within
and only springs
from glands above one’s eyes.
What’s more
the saline held within
such chambered tears
would damage do
unto a crying heart’s
two atria and to its ventricles
and cause eventually
congestive strife
or cardiac arrest
if not one’s death!

Dirt
How can dirt be brave and and [SIC] mighty
to involve itsef [SIC] in rapture
changing what was high and honest

I never thought

that dirt was sentient
and furthermore
possessed by a desire

at rapturing “mankind”.
But Joeph-Z

his claim is indisputable.

The Answer's "Yes"
In recent days
the question’s come to me
if acts of hedonistic immorality
have power to destroy
one’s moral purity
I find it strange
that such a question’s raised
at all
because it’s plainly obvious
and indisputable
to anyone
of sense or sensibility
and not just to all those
who’ve read St. Paul,
and therefore know
a sinner’s wage is death,
the answer’s “yes”.

Fairy Tales
Fairy tales are airy tales.
Would that they’d be true.
But hap’ly ever after
is a lie.
Ask Goldman, author of
_The Princess Bride_,
to tell you what he knew
became of Buttercup
and her lovely Wesley lad
before they died.
Would that they’d be true.
But hap’ly ever after
is a lie.

A Coyish Little Girl and a Dirty Old Man
I find myself
attracted to a little girl
and wish because
of her “demeanouring”
to hold her in my arms..
She’s given me, you see,
so quite intentionally
some bodied cues
that she should be
within my eyes
an object of desire.
And with her I agree.
But she in years
is less than twelve
while I am in my seventies
And given this
does it not seem
that she and I
do manifest perversity?
attracted to a little girl
and wish because
of her “demeanouring”
to hold her in my arms..
She’s given me, you see,

Summer's End
Before the dawn today
a lone goose flew close overhead
trumpeting a single forlorn note
that said,
“Summer’s on its deathbed now;
the year is darkening
and drawing to an end.
All that’s green
will soon be sere, un-thrived.
Abandon here!
Wing south to stay alive!”

Sara
Ah, you,
my first real love
the source of a recurrent sense
of loss, of joy,
and knowledge of how fire
could blaze inside my heart
along my limbs,
the object of my prayers!
Oh how the look of you
could make me inarticulate
tongue-tied
and in despair that I
was so unable when
within the aftermath
of kissing you
to then compose for
you some ardent, song-filled poetry.
Ah you, so fixed
and so abundant here
within my memory..

the source of a recurrent sense
of loss, of joy,
and knowledge of how fire
could blaze inside my heart
along my limbs,
