Growing Your Own
I popped down to the meaty tree
to pick myself a steak
on the way I waved at cows
busy surfing by the lake
Since the foodie revolution
they haven't much to do
They'd like to learn a language
but their only word is moo
All the butcher shops have vanished
queues for lamb chops are no more
and if your crave is sausages
they grow up through the floor
When you're aching for full English
bacon blossoms taste divine
I collect them in the hedgerows
and...

Pigeon Love
I wondered when we met
why those beady eyes were brooding
You smothered me with feathers
and started your canoodling
If only you'd stepped back
and allowed me space to breathe
before you fetched a ring
and got down on one knee
Reading all your mails and texts
would drive a bird to drink
so I've thrown away my phone
and I don't care what you think
I've changed my name and flown
to an island that's remote
a place you couldn't visit
not even with a boat
Next time you're on a date
be sure...

Inseparable
She waits happily
while the heart clocks whisper
behind my back
nuzzling the soft flesh of my ear
running a finger across worry lines
smiling as my eyes mist over
I flinch at the thought
of poor tomorrow's meal
Bonded from birth
and together always
our riches rolling in the long grass
celebrating summers with the thrill
of every new page turned
knowing each day belongs only to her
the bitterest truth we share
a forbidden unspoken word ...

At War with Words
Why do you stare?
I am only words on a page
My inspiration was never yours
Is it that you wish to learn
or do you seek to be entertained?
Whether you are piggybacking
on the coat-tails of love
or fleeing from the hopelessness of hatred
my message will be the same
If I could tell you one thing only
it would be to escape
Now
before the years become stronger
than the bars of the cage
Before fears grow fixed
in thick stone walls
of humdrum grey
Run
from the life

Bird-Dog
I've been living in a tree
with a three legged dog
to keep me company.
He lies by the fire and wags his tail
to the smell of burning leaves.
There's a ladder to the ground
going halfway down
so I'm never sure what's coming
and though he loves to go for walkies
he doesn't do much running.
He couldn't chase a cat
or fetch a tennis ball
but he likes to sniff and pee
and to get back in the tree house
he clambers on his knees.
He'll eat a bird for...
