In the last century my professional work was exacting and technical. It was quite creative and I enjoyed it. After being forced into early retirement I began using the then developing WorldWideWeb to spread information useful to others. That was an unpaid hobby which was also rewarding. Now, with thousands of commercial sources of information online it is redundant. So, as I approach the end of my life, what should I do? I am surrounded by thousands of books. They are my friends. I cannot dispose of them and rarely lend them. The bookshelves filled up decades ago, the tables and chairs can hold no more, so now they stack up on the floors of many rooms in an almost random assortment. History and biography. Travel and science. Ships and the men who sailed in them. Wars and the people who fought in them. A little good literature, which I don't read much, and crime thrillers which are as enjoyable and forgettable as a one-night stand with some merry girl picked up in a pub.
