The Ballad Of The Poem Of 2024

"Now listen, Poem, and listen well,
pin back both your ears
and hear the things that I must tell.
I shall allay your fears.

It's me and you, the whole year through,
and never you I'll drop,
and on this page our words we'll strew.
We'll write and never stop!

We'll write through sunshine and through rain,
through winter and the spring,
we'll write through laughter and through pain,
whatever Fate may bring,

and come December when at last
you, Poem, are complete,
we'll look back on the year that's passed,
then sit and rest our feet."

The Ballad Of The Poem Of 2024 (cont.)

"What shall we write, then, Poem, mate?
What shall our subject be?
Have you a heart for any fate?
For Love? Philosophy?

Should we find out if life exists
on Jupiter or Mars?
Go blasting in our rocket ships
at speed towards the stars?

Perhaps a tale of sweet romance
would be more to your taste?
The whirling, twirling ballroom dance
with lots of passion laced?

Or something mundane, kitchen sink,
reality, hard, bare?
The Innocent, thrown in the Clink?
The horrors she found there?

I can't decide, my Poem friend,
and so I think it's best
to bring this section to an end
and have a little rest."

The Rime Of The Poem Of 2024 (cont.)

But who's this coming down the road?
It surely can not be?
It is! The Ancient Mariner,
who stopped one once of three!

"Ahoy! ye salty old sea dog!
What are you doing here?
There are no weddings taking place.
No Wedding Guests are near."

"I care no more for Wedding Guests!"
the Ancient one he said.
"It's you yourself that I now seek,
to fill you full of dread!

My every word  will chill your blood,
and fear will grip your heart!
And all your hair will stand on end
when I my story start!"

sharing a cigarette
watching the glow
of oncoming dawn
I lean on his shoulder

and he says
I have a journey to make
I have a decision to take
the road will be long

I hold on to his warmth
shivering in nonexistent cold
blood draining into my heart
it is coming....

The Ballad Of The Poem Of 2024 (cont.)

He scooped her up and kissed her hard.
She melted in his arms.
She'd not been kissed like that before,
not known such manly charms.🙃

"I must go now, my love," he said,
when they could kiss no more.
"Oh no! " she gasped. "Please don't say that!
It's you that I adore!"

"I must, my love," he sadly said.
Her eyes filled up with tears.
"To sail away, I must today
be gone for years and years.

That Ancient Seaman's story said
to far lands I must roam,
and worse by far he said that I
must go away alone."

The maiden sobbed, the maiden wept,
her tears fell thick and fast.
"My life is over now," she wailed,
"and all my joys are passed."

He turned and left her weeping there,
though his heart broke with pain,
and never did he think he would
see her fair form again.

She said:
build me a shed by the river
that runs through the woods
that I may see the crystal clear water
flowing to its final destination

weave me a tapestry
where love is the golden thread
that runs through the images
of its decorative flora and fauna

paint me a picture
that captures the sun-rays
of happiness
through the canopy of trees
in the wilderness

The Ballad Of The Poem Of 2024 (cont.)

Her words came floating on the wind
and mingled with his blood.
He turned around, ran back to her
and kissed her where she stood.

"My love," he said, "I'll do those things!
I'll do those things for you!
I'll build a house in woods so green
beside that river blue,

then you can sit and watch it flow
away towards the sea,
and we shall be so happy there
that never we shall have a care,
just you, our love and me.

A picture I will paint for you
of sunlight through the trees,
and hand in hand we'll walk in it,
contented and at peace,

not ever blissful lovers will
have known such bliss as ours,
as lost in love our two hearts soar
and skip out through the moon's white door
to dance among the stars.

And we shall weave our tapestry
with Love's own golden thread
and lay it on our bed at night
when we lay down our head

and it will cover us with love
till Dawn's own golden light.
The love that's ours will be a love
that is so pure and right."

The moon shone down upon those two
as they embraced and kissed,
and all the night was wrapped around
in soft and gentle mist.

She said:
let the winged dove of peace
touch my heart and soul
for rest is what I seek
to repose amid the field
of baby breath blooms
and poppy flowers

innocence have I not
nor soldiers blood to celebrate
but I have wish of both
and a touch of the divine

The Ballad Of The Poem Of 2024 (cont.)

He said to her: "My love, my love!
Please put away your care.
Your quest for rest has reached its end!
Of this I truly swear.

Your heart and soul now tenderly
I'll cherish evermore.
Your heart and soul at last will find
a loving harbour, safe and kind,
at ease upon my shore.

This hard and hateful, wicked land
to us has not been fair,
but now at last we two are one,
of sorrows not I care.

Let's go away and leave behind
this life so cold, so bleak,
and let's together find that peace,
the peace of Love that knows no cease,
the peace that we both seek.

Let's live among the poppy fields,
the poppies red as Love,
the skylarks' singing melodies
in singing skies above,

and all our sorrow, all our pain,
those birds will sing away,
and we together in our life
will know no more of any strife
and Love will come to stay.

He said, that Ancient Mariner,
that I must leave alone!
That Ancient Mariner must think
I have a heart of stone!

For never could I leave behind
a girl as nice as you!
Let's go, my love, my own fair Queen,
let's go, my love, and build our dream
with bricks of Love so true
."

The moon shone down upon those two
as they embraced and kissed,
and all the night was wrapped around
in soft and gentle mist.

The Ballad Of The Poem Of 2024 (cont.)

The Ancient Mariner appeared,
as they stood kissing there,
and watched a while in thought and saw
the love between that pair,

and such a love he'd never seen
as was betwixt those two
that knew he in his rotten heart
the two could never bear to part
whatever Life should do.

"Avast, ye lubbers!" he then cried,
"And hear what I shall say.
I said before that you must part
upon this sorry day,

but now I've seen you so in love,
I know this can not be,
and so together you will go
across the lands and ocean's flow
to find a thing for me.

For once I shot an albatross.
I shot it! Shot it dead!
And ever since a wretchéd life
has been the life I've led.

I'm cursed to wander through the world
relating my sad tale,
to live again with sorry word
of how I killed that noble bird
as it flew by our sail.

My sorrow will go ever on
and there will be no lack,
until two lovers, true of heart,
bring me my arrow back!

And that's the task I set for you,
before I can be free:
to search the world and find the dart
with which I pierced that poor bird's heart,
and bring it back to me."

The lovers heard his words and groaned.
They knew that come the dawn
upon their quest they must set out
and from their home be gone.

She wakes and see:
rays twinkling through
the trees outside her window
sounds of sea waves
lapping the sandy beach
sounds of birds
flying from tree to tree

the sounds of fishermen
their boats coming ashore
of wives running to greet
their beloved
fresh from the sea
with heavy laden nets

Brushes her sleep
from her eyes
its a new day
a Glorious Morning
Coffee Kisses
warmth

don't be sad
she whispers
don't ever be sad

The Ballad Of The Poem Of 2024 (cont.)

She sipped her coffee from her cup
and sat there in the sun.
She whispered, "Darling, don't be sad,"
but still her Love slept on.

"My love, wake up!" the Maiden said,
"Today we must be gone
upon our Quest to find that Dart."

But still her Love snored on.

"You lazy lump!" the Maiden cried,
"The day is now half done!
Are you not getting out of bed?"

But still her Love snored on.

The Maiden formed a fiendish plan
and took a sharp, sharp pin,
then jabbed it in her Lover's leg:
it went two inches in!

"ARRGH! ARRGH!" her Lover screamed aloud,
blood pouring from his gash,
and leaping out of bed he tripped
and landed with a crash.

"At least you're up," the Maiden said,
with cold and stony heart.
"We have to get our packing done
and then we can depart!"

"My love,"
he said, "I'm sure you could
have found a gentler way
to wake me from my blissful sleep
so we could start our day."

"Don't moan!"
the Maiden sharply said.
"It's time for us to go!"
I can't believe that any man
has ever been so slow!"

Of course the man once he began,
his packing was soon through.
The Maid, however, took three hours,
as Maidens often do. 🙃

At last the pair were packed and done
and down the road they went,
to find the Dart, their Quest it was,
and everything it meant.

she sighed:
the long walk under the moonlit sky
with the gentle breeze caressing their hair
they looked for signs from up high
was the destination in the land so far
that feet could not reach it's shore tonight
would there be adversary along the way
would they be lost in the unfamiliar light
would Hecate the Moon have pity
on their quest in the land of faraway

she said:
draw back the curtains
let me see the sky
let me breathe the scents
of flowers from outside

sing me a lullaby
a gentle goodbye
before I close my eyes
and slumber in peace
