Death Gods Arise
Froth on waters crimson
Bubbling up to realdom
signs of impending doom
Death gods risen to claim
Souls of man yet to die
Xibalba's gates open
Mictlantecuhtli's minion
rise up among the people
Adorned in bones
Of captured souls
walk them upon the earth
Briefly before the end
when men would bend
their knees to the eternal
might of the lords of death
No man can say no
to them, the gods of death
when they harvest
the sheaves will be tied
to feed their might.

I have a question, if I were to write a poem here considering this is right up my ally, would I have to write in perspective of one of the stories told in this mythology or could I do a personal perspective using characters an events in the mythology?

Yes to both - I want the reader to be able to see one of these underworlds. Other than that, I'm flexible.

this is an old one, but maybe it'll get some creative juices flowing
HADES
I’m onboard and in the dark,
Black currents shifting below.
The gloom is thick, it seems you can cut it.
Charon sees with restless eyes,
He’s the ferryman of the deathly droves.
I can hear the cries around me
All the voices say the word, “Why?”
Will I see Elysium or maybe Tartarus?
I await to be judged,
Among the other groans and sighs.
Hades spies all with his Helm of Darkness
Gripping his bident of duress.
The Lord of the Dead waits to greet me,
I will take my place with the dead.
I take my place along the Styx.
I cannot hear my cries over the others
As Charon sails off into the shadows.
In the distance, a resounding bark
Giving us dread that traps and smothers.
With the legions of the dead
You hear the sufferings of a thousand years.
(What was done cannot be undone.)
Down in the dark confines
You experience terrors of a thousand fears.
(Cannot fight, you cannot run.)
A three-headed beast looms
Before the thrones of the fallen kings.
Judgment waits for the host of dead.
Will you suffer or be offer reward,
Or simply feel Cerberus’ sting.
As I stand
Before Minos,
He glares at me
With phantom eyes.
He is cruel,
Unwavering,
Evil and unfair.
And he judges me.
What will be?
What shall become
Of me? If
I could breathe I
Would hold my
Breath. Nerves undone
By those eyes.
Fleshless fingers
Point at me
And condemn me
The pits of
Tartarus,
Await.
Into the void, I am tossed
Screaming, I fall for eternity
The blackness surrounds me
Crimes of life flash before my eyes,
If only I could be free.
Into shrouded obsidian I smash,
The jagged rocks pierce my ghostly flesh.
Pain wracks my dead body
I cough up necro ichor.
But I cannot die again, such is my wish.
But things move
In the dark here.
Tentacles
Slither around
Me while some
Thing else hisses
Venom in
The air before
Me. Glowing red
Eyes see through
My soul. Titans
Surround me.
And welcome
Me to the pit.

here's another
THE HEROES OF PERSEPHONE
She sits on the throne of the dead
While her cruel husband visits battlefields.
Loneliness sets its way in
And then fantasies begin.
Persephone watches fallen heroes with hungry eyes
Images of Achilles wets her thighs.
Longing and lust awakens from loneliness.
Bringing about immortal horniness.
Cold dead fingers bone the moistness
Until she reaches orgasmic voices.
Dripping juices on obsidian floors
From the twat of the underworld whore.
She spies Hector with a Trojan
With his sharp eyes roving
Over her lithe undead flesh.
She wishes for his caress.
But there stands Heracles with his bulge
His muscles glisten for her indulge.
She longs for his powerful embrace,
Just for a little taste.
Masturbation while sipping Pomegranate juice
Messaging while she’s spreading loose.
Staring at Jason’s Argonaut,
In his loincloth, muscles nice and taunt.
But too soon her lord returns
And she loses her longing burns.
Hades, with his crown of shadows
Never even sees her.

LIVING UNDER THE SEA - THE MARIANA TRENCH
I am not an astronaut
I am a modern mermaid
Made by making one lung into a gill
Sent down to the deepest depth
I can breath air in my compound
The size of a trailer
When I go out I carry oxygen
Turn on my gill
Swim at the lowest place
The sea floor
The Mariana Trench
It took me a long time to come down
With my comrades who keep dying
I have the constitution they like
Send new people, keep on trying
Thousands of creatures live here
Where it is freezing or hydrothermal
The creatures are resistant to temperature changes
Some creatures live to being 100 or so
We know more about outer space
Than we know about the deep ocean
As a scientist I am here to know
This is not the realm of Satan
Though misinterpretation of the bible may say
The species here have been for 100 generations
The diligent work of Jacques Cousteau
Lives on in each and every exploration
Astronauts are living legends
Aquanauts will be next
Undersea living is an option
As much as the space station above
The undersea world is a paradise all its own

I worry for the people of Japan
across whose lands
afterwinds still blow.
I worry that her children
dream of reptilian things
grown large and misshapen.
Last night I dreamt
of Fukushima, Shinto demigod.
Fukushima trembled in fear
of the Sun Goddess
Amaterasu, Kami most high
whose light shone in Heaven.
Treacherous Fukushima
stole Amaterasu's necklace
that he might have its power
for himself.
Her necklace gone
the Sun Goddess grew pale.
From his sky perch
Tsukuyomi, god of the moon
ruler of the night
plotted revenge on his sister
Amaterasu, who long ago
cast him into darkness.
From deep within the earth
Izanagi, ancient father
to Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu
awoke in Yomi, the underworld.
It is time, Izanagi thought
to gather my children
and leave the Earth
to everlasting winter.
Oh foolish Fukushima
soon to wear a coat of ice
for a necklace
he did not understand.

ok, here is another old one to enhance the gloom...
THOUGHTS OF A NORSEMAN
Awaiting my rebirth at the point of death,
To die in glorious battle, I won’t regret.
I live by the sword and die as so as well,
To earn my honor, I will never fail.
Battle born is the truth,
Blood and bone, I’ve paid my dues.
One day I’ll find myself before the walls
To feast inside of Odin’s hall.
Upon the field I stand, ‘til alone, I'm left alive,
To reach the point of honor for which I strive.
My shield is strapped to my wrist,
Bless my sword with one final kiss.
I can still smell her on the wind,
Like roses from past summer sent.
Fair hair cascades her lovely face
By her blue eyes I am truly graced.
The long ship plows through the waves,
Bringing me back to the day.
The smell of the sea mixed with the sick
Spewing overboard into the slick.
A loaf of bread with soup of hen
Are there, my only friends.
They keep us alive, strong and more
Until Odin leads us to the shore.
So many times I picture her freckled face
It lights this cold and dreary place.
She offers me solace, she offers me peace
As we set sail into the east.
I was such a poor man among the Norse,
No hope for home or horse.
She is a woman of wealth in coin and heart,
A beacon in the night.
It is for her I fight, I’ll lay down my life
By sword, ax, bow or knife.
The raiders they took away my star
And left me with a scar.
I sail for vengeance of my love
For her, I will have blood.
Will she greet me before the hall of our lord,
And kiss me at the door?
In Vahalla we will stand among the runes,
And look upon the Kingly tombs.
We will await until the day Ragnarok comes
And weather the coming storms.
I must depart for one more fight
To beat back the coming night.
Here I wait in the rain that pours
To she her face once more.

WARRIOR'S DEATH
My path is laid before me,
But is forked, left to right.
One of clear skies
And one of mist,
Which will lead me
To my rest?
Odin, I pray to you,
In your wisdom,
Show me the way
So I may stay
On the right track.
You suffered for me
So I beg you suffer
My ignorance.
I seek only to find
My way to your hall
And await the day
Of Ragnarök.
Where I may fight
By the side
Of the Gods
And die
My warrior’s death.
My path is laid before me,
But is forked, left to right.
One of clear skies
And one of mist,
Which will lead me
To my rest?
