Roads of Nowhere
I first found you under a bridge, picking up
fallen stars. The dust on your shoes shone
with half stories.
You smiled and shared a warm cup of you.
Filled with anywhere, I drank, wanted
you to pour more.
Your hands told me of today's cider presses, pear
trees and hot soup meals. You kept your yesterdays
and I kept mine.
We flowed into each other outside clocking minutes,
forgot the calendar of names. Our blood pumped;
in days, out nights.
The skies spun around, the moon stared, blinked but
autumn promises never keep. We chased summer,
corn fields and trails.
Our history is gone, ground into the southern road slipping
past. You know, baby, what they say... tramps like us
were born to run.

Broke both legs landing
forgot the fall
baby, brace these fractured femurs
with your divine impatience
like you, I was born to run
that I grabbed from gods ashtray
ask me if we're alone
I'll lie
and say we aren't
Sip bathtub whiskey
with me
in these stolen moments
slowed enough
to assign a personality
on each breath
then back on down the line
you to the east
me to the other
we'll meet on the equinox
of each year
I'll lie and say we're not alone
forgot the fall

my thoughts have traveled train tracks. and I've looked for
you. especially in the tunnels, between stations; where there's no light
Jimini rolled away
A man sat beside me on the platform
his head cradled in his hands
stealth crying
but his shoulders were giving him away
and the wheels on his chair
swayed a little
he looked over and paused
his face was thick with deep lines
and he said
"I'll tell you this my friend
if you'll lend me your legs
I'll run onto the tracks in a hurry
so as not to give you nightmares
either way, this day will see me dead
so help me god"
he looked at me again
a little more menacing this time
and rolled slowly towards the tracks
I didn't have the heart to stop him
nor the stomach
to watch a man fry on the lines
so I simply got up off my chair
and left

The runs
The shine of red,
yellow and green
traffic lights on wet asphalt
like rainbows drowning
in an oily abyss.
The deep dark where dreams
taken hostage in the days
of wonderment turn
into rancid shadows
with any resemblance
to innocence gouged
from memory.
A body bundled
in odds and ends
of attire shuffles
along in the rain
sifting through trash
cans for sustenance
till the cramps
of hunger burn
the faintest of feelings
from the lower limbs
dropping the cloaked
face onto the pavement.
The crash and moans stir
a man of two and a half score
wearing a handful of black
plastic garbage bags over
a modified sleeping bag
from his nap in a bus shelter.
He walks over to the fallen
figure whimpering in a puddle.
It is a girl maybe on the tail
end of her teens with a bloody
nose and eyes like a shark.
“You ok, Miss ?”
“I'm dying.”
“You a hemophiliac?”
“Hemo what? What's that, music ?”
“Music ? No it means you can't stop bleeding.”
“I've been bleeding since I've been born.”
“You're still a baby.”
“And I'm still bleeding.”
The man unrolls toilet
paper from his pocket
like a cheesy magic trick
rubbing the blood
from her tiny nose.
“Well, this one will stop soon.”
“Don't bother, let me bleed to death.”
“That's not going to happen.”
“I don't deserve to live.”
“That seems a little harsh.”
“You don't know me, old man”
“I know folks like you.”
“Then you know I hate my life.”
“Then change it.”
“Haa, like you ? You're just a tramp.”
“Flattery will get you no where, Miss.”
“So what's your story, old man?”
“You were born bleeding ?
I was born running.”
“From what ?”
“Home, the law, you name it,
lately it's been from myself.”
“So why don't you just die?”
“Die? You fuckin' nuts ?
The only thing I know
is however bad it gets here
that darkness on the other side
is a million times worse.
I don't want no part of that.”
“So you run?”
“So I run. It's the devil I know.
And you should probably run too.”
“You can't tell me what to do.”
“True, but that cop heading over here can.”

BORN TO LOVE
Those moments we had on the beach of our island paradise
Will forever be treasured in our minds and loving hearts
Written out in the stars and etched upon our identical palms
We had this common bond, strange feelings since we were young
‘cause star-crossed lovers like us; we were born to love, not to run
My beloved Adelaide, how can Fate be cruel to us for so long
Visions of you only appear in my dreams, until you came along
We made love under the crescent moon all night long, till we drop
Oh baby it’s unbelievable, no words can describe how it feels
Our undying love for each other, the moment seems unreal
Beyond the horizon I could see a beacon of shining hope
As long as we keep holding on to the last strand of the rope
Which shall bind our love forever, until the end of time
If ever I die first, please don’t forget my solemn request
That you take my remains to the sea where we used to play
There’s no place like home, where my final respite should be
Until then my Adelaide, we’ll dance with our silent heartbeats
And keep the embers burning within our souls, now entwined
‘cause star-crossed lovers like us; we were born to love, not to run
(Sing to the tune of BORN TO RUN)

Without true belief
There isn’t any room for grief
None. That churning of charged D-motion
How it releases into the stillness
Not love, but the waning vibrancy of lust
Again that fortuitous chance; taken
Here.. Then gone
The secrecy always getting us off
So quick in how we’d get a loft
How we’d…take it off
Each meeting only meant to go bye
The Getaway
That’s always been The Play
Fueled cheetahs. Running down rumors of bored
Dumb. Where our “born again” entanglement
Seemingly worth every bit of our brief stare
You and Me simply craving to go there
Up the stair… that’s the price we’d pay
Surrendering. We’d be into each other’s smooth-tongued texture
Those same tongues; twisted
Tangled going the extra
Sweat running then leaving us
Funny how only the cold could bust us
How we’d collide then slide, then
Later slip out from underneath
Twin Half-Truths dying to stand pat
But no, not really, not at all
Tramps like us we were born to run
Like ghosts. Spooked by our own shadow
We’d skedaddle with the quickness
To stick around couldn’t fix this
We knew this; yet in still in this stillness
We both know who we are
Both convinced as usual
That our now dormant tongues
They’d need to taper any later regret
The kind formed by that other set
Them houses, them spouses… those nice kids
But in the “right now” it is what it is
Where our meeting is only meant to go bye

A muzzle to the mouth of hell (My bed)
Legs think shaky things
when faced with the thought of the monsters beneath the bed
the ones that tug the tips of sheets with choking grips
they latch to the hitches in heartbeats
with barbs in their tongues
that were silk once
before what they took
found the smoothness of edges appealing
they tell me
of houses where paint drips from disdain
and the basins echo with ringing regret
from sun up to sun down
I hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet
demons run on tightropes
that stretch from sun to stars
from the grope of fleshy knots
my legs pour words
meant for each other
into the holes left by footprints
tramps like us were born to run
but we lost sight of safe
and still can't find away
