WEDDINGS

It is June.  Why do women want to be June brides?

1. submit up to 3 poems about any aspects of weddings...if you have a particular wedding tradition - share it
2. old or new poems
3. any genre - but flash fiction - no longer than 1000 words
4. there are some wedding customs in history which are rather
  piquante.....bundling, sleeping together until the bride
  shows a baby bump - to marry a FERTILE woman....all this
  plus showing the blood on the sheet.....so lots of writing
5. further instructions will be added if I have forgotten

February's bride

All of our history
was written in the winter

our first kiss;
the stroke of scars in snow,
the frost that weaved lace
into my hair.

The questions came in your sleep
and I answered with love,
small diamonds in my eyes

I had nothing to offer
but the coins in my pocket,
tight fists; a constant will to change.

We will marry in the Winter
as the ice veils me once more,
and the birds sing their songs
above our union

until the blessed end
of time.

(On a side note after reading that article - Dear god, she must be the most ungrateful bride in history! Getting married isn't about getting something out of it. We haven't asked for a single damn thing!! What a stuck up sad little bridezilla she must be inside!)

Having planned 2 weddings...........eek
They cost MONEY.....so either make your own wedding
- some of the at home weddings were NICER than
the ones costing 150,000.....
It is a sin to spend so much on a wedding when
the divorce rate is so high and the money
better spent on giving it to CHARITY.....
Whatever is given should be gratefully acknowledged
Anybody find some people do not acknowledge even
GENEROUS gifts

Nontraditional Traditions

At daybreak he'll pay the ransom,
so we may share a common cup,
together beneath ornate arches,
betrothal blessed and candles lit,
rose coloured cloth underfoot,
traditionally crowned as man and wife,
bound, as the Russians call it, in Sacred Mystery

Here, you'll find no white silk
or long flowing veils,
no antique pearls ,
babushka's emerald tiara
will adorn ebony curls,
alabaster skin sheathed by black lace
his gothic bride in rugged combat boots  

Under invitation from Kitty, this was inspired by the country Joan of Arc and Bernardette of Lourdes grew up in (neither of whom married).

PEASANT GIRL

First communion takes place,
Then she joins the adult race.
A cycle in country life,
Journey from maiden to wife;
Go to dances, meet young men,
Get married and have children.

Each stage is a passage rite,
Confirmand to bridal white.
Today’s village virgin bride,
Tomorrow’s child’s mum and guide,
To be followed one stage on
Mentoring grand-daughter/son.

I nearly fell down the steps - I was making my grand entrance - my first wedding...because I was not used to wearing a long dress and I never could figure out how to walk in heels......

I Want A Mate Who Won't Berate Me

I want a mate who won't berate
Me in a nagging way,
Or pester me if I should be
Asleep throughout the day.        

I want no wife who makes my life
Too difficult or taxing,
I hate being asked to do a task
Just when I am relaxing.

I can't abide a bride who chides
Me if I fail to do,
The things that she keeps telling me,  
That she would like me to.

I want a bride who won't deride
Me if I'm on a couch,
And when I'm loafing on a sofa
Won't become a grouch,  

The kind of she who won't want me
To be too strong or fit,  
Or if I shirk a husband's work,
Will never mind a bit.  

Or if my torso gets more so,
Will love me just the same,
And if I don't buy her things won't
Be likely to complain.  

Or if I only stay at home,
Won't tell me I'm a bore.
That is the sort of mate, in short,
Who I am looking for.
