Written Goals for 2021

With 2020 almost over, it’s time to look ahead. The pandemic has changed our lives and relationships, it disrupted our plans and objectives in one way or another. Many of us have experienced loss and some are still suffering. Let’s hope it won’t last forever.

Once things begin to change for the better, we also have to focus on the things we want to achieve, the things we want to change but only you yourself can do that. Resolutions to me have always been a wish list we think of or say to ourselves or to friends and family in the spirit of excitement for the new year, but a written goal is visible and tangible.

This comp is more of a two-part challenge.

1)   Write down 10-15 goals of the things you want to achieve in your personal life for the next 12 months. Have it in a card, on your phone, somewhere where it’s visible every day. You can even develop a detailed plan to help you achieve that specific goal. This should fuel your fire and ambition to reach your objective. Keep that list to yourself, or you can share with your spouse, family, friends, it’s up to you.

2)   For this competition you can choose 3 to 5 five goals, whichever you feel more comfortable with sharing with us here at DUP in your poem. I’m looking for poetry that speaks of your passion and your desire to succeed in areas of your life you’ve always dreamed.

Rules
1. Title Your Poem
2. Mention 3 – 5 goals you wish to achieve within the poem
3. Any poem style but no prose
4. New poems only
5. One entry per poet
6. Min 100, Max 500
7. Submit the poem in your page and link to the comp
8. 3 weeks
9. Questions? PM me

Whether you do part of one of the challenge is really up to you, but I think it’s a great exercise in your journey.

I hope everyone is being safe and keeping healthy. If anything, this pandemic has shown us it that we are all connected somehow someway.

Good luck in the comp and I’d love to hear more about your dreams and hopes.

Written Goals

I’ve never been too keen on New Year’s resolutions
They’re words carried off by the wind and into the past
Like promises half-ass made there’s no true commitment
Because weeks into the new year, many of them don’t last

I have always been a proponent of writing it all down
Written goals are more tangible and easier to believe
It helps because you can hold yourself accountable
A map with objectives of the things I want to achieve

Written goals are like contracts of my visions and dreams
I have to put in the work and follow through every day
I’m tired of saying: "maybe next time, may next year"
Only to be stuck in the rut but now with more grays

No more pussy-footing around, I’m making this vow
In ’21 - I finish the two novels and publish my poems
Heck I already started my website, I have to finish it now
I guess, sometimes I’m too afraid of all the unknowns

I want to take more control of my life and surroundings
So everyday I’ll look at my list and ask, am I doing it right?
I'll have an action plan that I can execute with precision
I know it won’t be perfect, but I’m ready to take flight

5 Capitals

They start as transparent strands of smoke
barely noted they arose
wisp's that conjured some vain hope
the mountain tops beyond my scope

Resolution's grand mirage
to see them fall, all undischarged
my sights too high, the step too large
and always dealt a loosing card

But below, burned some vain hope
an increment, some isotope
that some small Deed, some act bespoke
to help myself and other folk

 As I flounder, always smile
be summer, in the grey times vile
beaming through the masks percale
and sing so strong, just like Adele

Hopes tentacles, lie half deferred
and distance was the trendy word
but Kindness shrink, and soon to merge
Selflessness, not loud but purred

When the mind is treading water
and support's so hard to muster
be the soapy bubble floating upwards
blown from lips, Kind sentiments are uttered

Make a list and hold it close
not in capitals for me to boast
in lower case for my purpose
and Strength to reach those goals
