Father's Day

The last time I saw you breathing
Paralyzed from waist down
On hospital bed, vulnerable

I wanted your recognition
But you hugged the younger
Acknowledging your paternity

Our next meeting, you slept
As I faced a gauntlet
Of knees and sniping mouths

You lay in a wood box
So motionless
Creeping realization darkened
My five year old heart

I tried to keep you alive
Setting my eyes to follow your aims
"You will never be a race car driver!" mom screamed
Punctuating the rebuttal with a hard slap

"Ashes to ashes," I heard
The impact of hand on face
A hammer driving in coffin nails.

I tried in desperation to cling to something
My mind grasped at music you enjoyed
"I want to be a singer, like Glen Campbell"
The rebuttal - a shrill "No!"
That echoed in my head as "Dust to Dust"

Her eyes filled with bitter tears
And her heavy hands dug into me
With the force of a shovel wedging ground
And I saw the coffin, now lowered
Disappearing beneath spades
Of dark earth

Beacon

You are no longer here
to hold during nights of terror

You will no longer sing to me
when my heart begins to break

You now live as a memory
in a mind that is starting to fade
but I forgive you for leaving

so when...

The malice of a dream
reaches through the veil
and steps into reality
I will look

or...

Phantom hands pushing down
shredding my defenses into pools
of discarded fabric on a granite floor
I will look

or even when...

A hand steals the scream
yet to form in my throat
I will no longer reach for you
in those moments of terror

because you are gone
and that's okay
you showed me the way
so long ago
during my time of grief

so...

I will look for the light
that leads me home
left as a beacon
of a love that will never grow cold

Thanks for a great comp, Barona.  And again, I'm impressed you are judging your own.

Thank you so much, Barona.  It's a pain I hope you never experience - and yet, I feel we all must at some point in our lives.
Congratulations to AEMelia and Ash - both your entries were very moving and I'm honored to be standing among you.
