Escapade

She was the bright lights at 2am
The rich color of $200 champagne
Dancing, moving, gold glitter
Making her eyelashes and cheeks
Sparkle
As the strobes flare once again
Pills in her pocket
And her heart on her sleeve

Late nights, climbing rooftops
Strangers tasting her lips
Laughter and smiles
She asks for the gun
And she takes another shot
Her eyes the color of a sunset in New York
Paper dissolving on her tongue
And it all fades away once again

Waking up in a different bed every morning
Streaked eyeliner and smudged mascara
She throws on her shirt
And leaves without a second look
Her heart and mind numb
Not feeling the vivid bruises on her arms

The clock striking 4 in the morning
Wandering the streets as the lights
Slowly go out
Echoing steps
Monsters in her veins
The shadows singing and whispering
Paying for a motel and locking herself in,
Starting the water in the shower
Yet only able to sob under the soft
Stream of water

Grey under her eyes
And purple staining her fingertips
As she clutches the coat
Tighter around her
Pills in her pocket, heart on her sleeve
The world flickers

She flickers back

Bob Chasing Dragons in the Park

In every city in the world
You’ll find them there
Chasing dragons in the parks
Faces gaunt’ jaws open ‘never shut'
Dim emotionless eyes take turns to blink
Among these Zombies of the poppies
You might find a friend of mine
Or a faded copy of the original
Blowing across the grimy concrete
Like a dry leaf before the first snow
Living out his life in the twilight
These junkies, like my old friend
Minds slowly detach from bodies
Desires for love and sex dry up
Till they no longer can fuck
Lethargic bowels become arthritic
Till they no longer can shit

‘The Living Dead’
Yes, there is such a thing!

My old friend walks among them
Someplace, somewhere
You may catch a glimpse
Of his ragged form
Camouflaged against the city grey
A shadow of a human
Disappearing slowly into oblivion

Used

Her hips sway
to a tune
long forgotten

she lets me lick
the pollen from the
corners of her lips

she steals away
all the memories
I tried to lose

right to the head
I take her in
but I can't touch

'cos her skin consists
of something my hands
can't seem to grip

I know I can never
make her love me
but I don't care

to be honest,
I kind of like
the abuse

Habit

Send your vibe through my veins pulsing
feel your rhythm beat.

Kick the habit, skin convulsing
take me off my feet.

See the living far removed and so
we rot inside.

When there's nowhere left to go
and no one to confide.

Cast your magic down my track
and see our skies explode.

See the young man crawling back
and watch his eyes implode.

Send your chill into my bones
that writhe in memory.

When I'm sinking deep in your
euphoric harmony.

Fear the ghost that begs my view
and sets my soul ablaze.

When the spark ignites anew
as life is just a phase.

Feel you feast upon my flesh like
master over slave.

Take the habit, like my breath
and dig our lonely grave.

A Christmas Crackhead

On a trail in the park
the crack whore begged for help
Two days
and she'd fuck dog
for the price of a pipe

She needed food
clothes for winter
and a safe place to hang out
but it was too crazy
to think about now
when they were chasing her
all over town

I could trust her on that
as sure as the cuts and burns
down her thighs
might cry and lie at the same time
the shameful and the shameless
plainer than Christmas lights
always hurting
dreaming of her ten minute high

If you were homeless
for more than a year
started at thirteen
just like Mum and Dad
If your brothers and sisters
were all in care
and rehab said
you'd never want to quit
not even to be with your own daughter
what would you do
when all you have is a body like mine
What would you
fucking do?

She could dazzle a man alright
was still somehow a thing of beauty
but I had an answer
I knew she wouldn't like
and realizing we were both
as helpless as the moment
the universe had thrown us together
I turned
and ran
grateful for a comfortable life

Note to a Crack Head

After you
kept the street awake all night
every night

After you destroyed
other people's mail
and transformed the garden
into a takeaway for rats

After you hammered nails
into the water pipes
hid knives under the doormat
borrowed the man next door's bicycle
and sold it

After you stole donation bags
from outside charity shops
to soundproof your bedroom wall
and gave my name to police
the last time they locked you up

After you painted
red clouds on the ceiling
monsters in the hall
and all the windows black

After you threatened
to burn everything
and kill everyone
because you thought
the world was a nest of spies
in the post war ruins
of your personal Beirut...

After that,
don't you think
it might be time
to quit?

My Junkie Lover

The rules
were always:
Don't party
in the ashtrays
& please, please
please
no needles
to clean up
off the floor

But they were
my rules
never yours

I realized
you were zoned
when I called
on my way home
Your voice
screaming stray cat
decibel overload

And then the lights
flashing slowly
at the corner of our block
blues and reds
looming closer
until I knew
it was all for you

Pale limbs
stiffening too soon
just a baby under a blanket
stretchered out
through a hush in the crowd
while Death's surprise
grinned triumphant
riding high
on his bubble of air

So no more
final chances
no more last goodbyes
shit promises of rehab
brittle as the wind
not even a kiss goodbye
to ease the chill of wasted life
only memories frozen forever
with the ugly ache of alone
twisting its cruel knife
through the heart of a summer night

Snake eyes in paradise

Citric acid bubbles
for the pouting serpent
someone else i once knew
cooked up his soul on a spoon

Chain smoking the fumes of a burning fuse
you can roll a snake eyes
and be washed up on the shores of paradise
someone i once knew

Soul was always on the loose
it'll help you tie your noose
you make me think i should use my tie
and step up somewhere high

But not tonight mate,
we shall lay for the suns wake
hold the thought
pull out the telephone line
i've rolled a snake eyes
and im washed up in paradise

Left my soul on hold
when he just wanted someone to hold
holding me in the shadow of adversity
holding me in the shadow of who i could be

When we slept in the car
scratching poetry into the frosted glass
drinking the memories of our past
hoping the future will never ask of me

One X One

Got to stop this pain life causes everyday
The feen this needle feeds sleeps deep inside the veins
Chase the crack now Daddy's little girls on her back
Russian roulette if her mind was the money she had nothing to bet
All her dreams slowly fade away every time feens
So hard to take finally fell asleep never to awake
Someone hold me tell me things will be ok
No amount can fix me just make it go away
It starts to rot the brain with ignorance and then you go insane
One more line to heal like salt on flesh as the skin you peel
Across the tracks identified only by his back tat
It read The Taste Of Death well death tasted back and swallowed his last breath
Another slave now his Mother makes her way to his grave
Every single day praying for the baby that she just couldn't save
everything seems so far away I can't make through another day
Losing track of who I'm supposed to be and sinking deeper in this misery
visions of my past begin to haunt my dreams at last
Let me wake to find it's done and back the hammer off this gun
So the story goes but that's just the life that these three chose
We're just some so many more before us and many more to come
The 31st will be a year I finally lost my battle with the fear
See I'm the kid you couldn't help so I took it to the grave taken by myself
Gone everything is gone watch it as it falls
One X One
