Escapade

She was the bright lights at 2am
The rich color of $200 champagne
Dancing, moving, gold glitter
Making her eyelashes and cheeks
Sparkle
As the strobes flare once again
Pills in her pocket
And her heart on her sleeve

Late nights, climbing rooftops
Strangers tasting her lips
Laughter and smiles
She asks for the gun
And she takes another shot
Her eyes the color of a sunset in New York
Paper dissolving on her tongue
And it all fades away once again

Waking up in a different bed every morning
Streaked eyeliner and smudged mascara
She throws on her shirt
And leaves without a second look
Her heart and mind numb
Not feeling the vivid bruises on her arms

The clock striking 4 in the morning
Wandering the streets as the lights
Slowly go out
Echoing steps
Monsters in her veins
The shadows singing and whispering
Paying for a motel and locking herself in,
Starting the water in the shower
Yet only able to sob under the soft
Stream of water

Grey under her eyes
And purple staining her fingertips
As she clutches the coat
Tighter around her
Pills in her pocket, heart on her sleeve
The world flickers

She flickers back
