I placed a moment out of reach,
too young to explain the details
embroidered on its
white cotton sleeve.
I trusted it to mother,
she carried it behind closed eyes,
curved reflections pushing shapes
into a wrapped tight blanket.
I watched the light as it entered open eyes,
then scattered into saucers,
settling like fish returning
to the deepest parts of the pool.
We lay there casting quiet,
as the battle tent raged above us.
I held that moments single note,
gripped by translucent fingernails
so small, so imperfectly real.
Inhaled your sweet and perfect pale
that deepened scent of skin revealed.
My breath spread incantations
that promised you my touch.
The kiss I forged on your forehead
would only let in dreams, tell stories
of the worlds we’d weave and all
the songs they’ll come to sing.

My First Child
I love to take my 3-year-old daughter shopping.
She’s my first child.
I hold her by the hand,
And off we go together down the street.
I start walking too fast for her,
She asks me to slow down.
I observe her stride,
And three of her steps make one of mine.
I take her to Taco Bell to buy her an ice cream.
The ice cream falls off the cone,
And it makes a splatter on the floor.
She points to the ground and cries,
“Daddy, daddy, I want back my ice cream!”
We go to the sweet shop to get her a treat.
The little girl wants everything she sees.
Oh, she’s such a delight!
She brightens up my day,
And she makes the vendor smile.
She gets a large lollipop, and she beams.
We’re now in the department store.
I’ll buy some new clothes for her.
She tries on a pair of slippers.
They look so cute on her tiny feet.
She takes a Raggedy Ann doll to the cashier,
And then she skips along with me.
It’s fun to walk with her around the block.
A neighbour waves to us and says,
“She’s such a sweet little darling!”
An elderly woman asks me, “Is she your first child?”
And I smile at her and say, “Yes.”

Without Knowing
Awakened
upon a comforting breast
Familiar, predetermined
imbedded knowledge where
reality manifests
who we are
The passage of time
its structured pace allows
for the joining of spirits
Heart to heart intimate
details come to life
Take my hand, little one
Know me, through the ages
Love me, as I love you
Trust me, for eternity
My love for you
empowers my vibration
To have you in my life
fills me
with a deep gratitude
Words could never express
upon a comforting breast
Familiar, predetermined
imbedded knowledge where
reality manifests
who we are

The Lost Children
a single shoe by the road
filled with rainwater
soggy with faint smell
of an earthy foot
a little girl picked it up
pour out the water
she looked around
wondering who it belonged to
she ran towards the field
at the other end
where flowers bloomed
and butterflies fluttered around
a little boy stood
picking at flower petals
singing gustily aloud
laughing when butterflies floated by
they looked at each other
tow headed boy black haired girl
shoes forgotten, they held hands
and ran around on the field
they chased fluffy bunnies
played with two squirrels
a little honey bear
a few frogs and a dragon fly
they chatted with a praying mantis
blew bubbles from singing reeds
rolled down the mossy hill
drank nectar from blooms
then they heard a wailing
they saw a boy wrapped
in a black shiny shroud
and someone crying
'don't be sad, Jeremiah
they cried harder when
it was me, that got ran
over by my daddy's car'
the two little shadows
walked slowly away
fading into the night
entering the lights
they heard the laughter
of happy children
playing on a heavenly
playground and they smiled
Jeremiah and Azlina
joined the happy crowd
they no longer hear scary
voices in the night, serving pain
Or felt the horror
of hands pinching and grasping
as they take their pleasure
from pained little bodies.
