Day indigenous
They cast down your ideals, like pearls before swine
stand now your ground, hold the brave line
indifference seed is a noose without a rope
leave the truly native without chance of hope
Corrupt cavalry; shackle with bullets and teargas spray
intimidation, belittlement, isolated, betrayed
congress and senate speaking with forked tongue
pretenders holding a foreground, just one man alone
Poison the water rape all the land
authorities promises written in sand
let the steel of your ancestors sprit so brave
reach out and resolve, not to be swayed
like rock build a shell, impervious and hard
gather all your resourced, and give not a shard
rebuke and defend; your will shall prevail
the giant brought down like a tree in a gale
So give us our day; A token of trust
to muster our spirits and not be rebuffed
reclaim the past and hold our heads high
a chief from dawn until sunset and not be denied
For this, our birthright, and so we must band
all hearts with a reverence, a day to command
and all to remember America's past
for our wheel of fortune, from them it was cast
Just 24 hours to placate, the soul's unrest
the feathered crown, of all tribes headdress
now stoke our hopes, with wind and with fire
and seek the scalp, identity, our earths empire
stand now your ground, hold the brave line
indifference seed is a noose without a rope
leave the truly native without chance of hope

intimidation, belittlement, isolated, betrayed

The criteria of this competion was to Write a brief poem ( any form ) or essay ( no more than 500 words ) on why Columbus Day should be replaced with Indigenous People's Day. Every entry was deeply appreciated, as this is personal to me. However, the one that really stood out was Val's 'Indigenous America', as I felt it most embodied the criteria set forth.
Congratulations, Val. Thank you for participating and honoring our Native American heritage.
Slipalong's 'Day Indigenous' was another which embodied the spirit of the criteria so placed second.

Ahavati said:I have always hated Columbus Day because I felt it was akin to claiming another's home for your own. More and more states are replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day in order to shed light on historical facts.
Write a brief poem ( any form ) or essay ( no more than 500 words ) on why Columbus Day should be replaced with Indigenous People's Day. You have one week; best of luck.
With your permission, these entries will be sent to the Governor of my state, and possibly the President of the United states ( whoever he turns out to be ) as a petition type thing in poetic form in honor of my Cherokee heritage, as well as all other tribes. Your real name can or doesn't have to be used. However, a copyrighted symbol with your initials or only first/last name will be placed at the end of each. And, of course, DUP will be credited as the poetry site.
Thanks for participating.
Thank you so much, for this trophy !!
Congratulations Slipalong !!
Thank you Ahavati for thiis competition
Thank you for sharing your love for Indigenous people not only in America but throughout the world.
For the others who participated in this comp by entry or by reading the poetry please continue to reach out and support Indigenous People's whose culture and traditions we / they cannot afford to lose.

I recommend reading Mike Rose's novel "I Just Want to Be Average" https://samplius.com/free-essay-examples/analysis-of-i-just-wanna-be-average-written-by-mike-rose/ This book is about the peoples and vices that accompany us constantly. The human age is an age of suffering and struggle. Students study this book at inappropriate hours because most social issues have social impacts.
