If it mutates, it is going to be a bitch to get rid of.
All viruses are constantly mutating. We have been locked in an arms race with them since forever....that’s how the flu comes around every season. It’s really a soup of mutating strains. Mutation is how Covid-19 pulled of the neat trick of jumping species, and is why it’s so deadly.
You’re 100% correct about the impact if it is either mutating so quickly a vaccine dates too fast, or if there is some other issue with the idea.
One thing to note on vaccines, having just read an interview from Otago medical school. Rushing vaccines out without proper trials is an incredibly dangerous thing to do, as what you could do is produce a vaccine that only kills 95% of the strain, leaving 5% as a highly vaccine resistant super-bug kinda thing.....I get that bit. They are saying we should be planning for 12-18 months before a reliable vaccine is available at scale.

To me this isn't the end of the world. Times are tough but life is good. People are coming together and learning the true importance of what really matters. Today is another sunny day in my part of S. C., I 'll be going outside to enjoy that sunshine shortly. I prefer to make lemons into lemonade rather than cry in my beer.
Today's a good day too (I said that purposely).
Agreed...
California sun...go out and enjoy life...
Whenever you die , you die...
Don't ruin life by worrying...just be aware of
possibilities , then do what you enjoy !
Fuck the worry...that only destroys what good
time you may...or may not have a lot of , left in life !
I am going to rock the day...if I die , Que Sera , Sera !

The miracle cures stumbled upon so far really do lose their luster in light of the time table in which they will become available to the masses.

UK had a mind to use Herd immunity as their model. an interesting course of action. in the end the government balked to pressure and introduced the European measures
Herd immunity, if I got it right, would kick in once 60% of the population were infected. I think they were putting a lot of faith into the once you recover you'll be grand kind of thing. cant remember the projection for death rate but it must have been pretty high
I wonder if it would have been the way to go

This is how the mortality rate in Italy came to be over 8% (admitting they do have an aging population)
People think that quarantine or isolation is to protect them, but it is not. Most young/healthy people will get this and recover. The controls are in place to slow the transmission rate, to protect the vulnerable from the bad outcomes they will have with an overwhelmed healthcare system.

Herd immunity starts working at above 90%, although I’m basing that on measles programs.
Some things are certain. The mortality rate, the infection modes, the country’s healthcare capacity, that over 75% of the population will get this illness at some point unless the entire world eradicates it.
So, you either let it go fast/at its natural spread rate, kill whoever it will kill plus the people who die from things like car accidents etc due to no hospital beds left......or, you try to control the spread rate, while increasing your health support systems, to have less people die, but the whole thing takes longer.
They are the choices.
I feel the UK’s initial response was the same as the US one....really fuckin’ dumb, based on politics not science.

Comment stands. This isn’t about you. Your choice puts healthcare services at risk of being overwhelmed, which puts people on chemotherapy, people with respiratory illnesses etc etc at higher risk of a bad outcome.
I don’t care about you personally....in any situation there are statistical outliers both ways. Some will focus only on themselves and never act other than in self-interest. Others (like my friend who spent all day yesterday as a volunteer packing supermarket shelves) will go hard the other way. What matters is the average.
(Outliers are actually a genetic protection mechanism as a species. People individually doing different things in response to the same event, say a fire, gives best chance of survival as a species....but that is not required in this case since we have an understanding of the control methods)

I too am attempting to keep myself out of the conspiracy madhouse right now. Though it’s easy to tumble down that hole...
