I’ll be honest... I’m fucking balling here.

Keith Flint of The Prodigy died today aged 49. I remember watching the music video for FIRESTARTER and it completely blew my mind when I was younger. It also terrified younger me.... Keith was just stood there writhing in this totally inhuman way. He became the icon of the little rebel I always wanted to be.

The Prodigy became the sound of my younger years, my hometown and many interesting personal experiments along the way. They were icons of the 90’s British rave scene.

Keith Flint inspired the social conformity out of me, not to mention the militia of silverware that still adorns my face. Their music still inspires a fire in my belly. I write to it frequently.

Fragmentation


Strike—I’m used for fire
Strike—I am the heat
Strike—I was fire
Strike—I was scene

I’m dangerous
I’m dangerous
Watch me fragment and expand.
I used to shatter
I used to matter
I was the one who broke the glass.

Embrace the violence!
Embrace the silence!
Strike the dark and watch me spark.
(Strike, strike, strike…..the flint—watch it spark)

Ohhhhhh….I screamed it out loud
I punched it out, now—
They say I took my life and heart.
(Strike, strike, strike….the flint—watch it spark)

I lit the fire
I took it higher
My tears will sizzle in the flames.
I made it louder
I was flash-powder
‘Twas time and God just called my name.

Inflicted

Us 90s teens knew about the 80s new wave,
We craved a fresh way then came a new rave,
It was the house and electronic funk age,
Like punk with enough of rock and rage,
Teenage angst perfectly expressed
Beating us hard through the chest,
Because the music let us vent,
With the likes of Maxim and Flint.

For (US) it came from across the pond,
Like a hurricane but from the beyond,
Inviting us to jump into the pit,
And mosh like you would never quit,
US teens back then were angry and scared,
But Flint’s eyes perfectly gazed and stared,
He glared into our souls and we were petrified,
Face your demons or slowly die inside.

Someway, somehow we were all inflicted,
The self-torment kept us all restricted,
But the music was a perfect in every way,
The way the energy flowed from the stage.
But now that Flint is gone I’m lost in thought,
All plans for the future have come to naught,
I’m trying to breathe but my stomach’s a knot,
For every memory that the music brought,
        I can’t give it anymore, that’s all I Goth
