To Shy To Say I Love You

I’m too shy to tell you that I love you
though I’ve loved you from the moment I saw you
your smile captivates me.  I can’t help it,  suddenly I’m out of control
I try not to think of you and then I see you
there I go again looking for my breath, all the air is gone
I’m so afraid.  If you touched me, I might burst into flames
in your arms I would dissolve
you have no idea what you do to me
how can I tell you of my fantasies
would you even care to know

I’m too shy to tell you that I love you
such emptiness without the thought of you
I could live forever in the beauty of your smile
you stood next to me on the train.  I trembled uncontrollably
it was as if a garret choked the words still in my throat
the train moved sideways and you pressed against me
my heart stopped, the doors opened, and you were gone

Am I too shy to tell you that I love you
when next you’re near I will
to vaporize right in front of you I probably will
but I will have told you everything in those three words
my life, my world, the very essence of my being
             would that be too small

I was too shy to tell you that I love you
when next you stood by me on the train
the garret tight around my throat the air had gone again
your scent made me dizzy, I couldn’t get enough
I closed my eyes and tried to breathe again our bodies pressed
I felt a steady hand take mine so warm and sure and fine
you introduced yourself, I stood there numb, I think I said my name
your card you gave a gift to me, you smiled and then you left
I turned the card and held my breath
I love you is what you penned.

Donadagohvi

[font=Lucida Sans Unicode,Lucida Grande]You get my space
my need for distance
my thought process
burning early morning ink
across a wooden table
until after-light breaks

The creak of a door
into a whitened vastness
surrendering to winter
gravity pulling my age
from the interlocked
housing of organics

Yet there is that buck
dusted with snow
behind a bare branch
and the skulk of foxes
keeping distance
from my open walk

I can smell the ice
in the slowing water
my bones chilled
in this simple meadow
where I've retreated
to offer poetic verse
to dormant gods

I hear the brush of moccasins
stepping lightly upon the grass
with the utmost respect
daylight stretches into a yawn
the time of leaving has come

You’ll wrap me in a blanket
of arms and hold me longer –
the edge of the forest stirring
with frigid hunger yearning
for the taste of warm blood

Smoke rises from your hearth
the smell of tea and bread
we'll share before mid-morning
takes its toll on our schedule
demands our attention

You’ll lead me to the car
you warmed yourself
you’ll open the door
but won't let me sit
for another minute
or two - or ten
forehead to forehead
no words; same breath

Isn’t this what life is about
the sounds of the living walking
over dirt, chimney soot
warm and gritty to the senses
a reflection in a cabin window
of lovers embraced in belief -
"Donadagohvi"

Then one left alone, watching
the other depart, the other reflected
through the rear-view mirror -
distance swallowing them both

Woman, Sleeping

Your pen held your fear
in times when loneliness, a terror
kissed your children, your history
you feared would be taken from you,
you tapped into anguish, you knew
its language, the landscape of such

you tasted the plate glass hidden
in English words, polite and warmed
you traced the geometry of lines
on her face, morning white porcelain
light sheets and serenades of love-
you collected them between
her fingers; you knew they were yours.

It was your holy place, your fracture
the sudden crescendo of Sunday
immediate and eternally beating
your furrows dressed in clinging light,
her sleep shrouded in conclusions;
illuminations framed on pages clean
of dreams they stole from you.
