sometimes tricks are treats

 
Daddy thoroughly enjoyed Halloween
seeing all the little kids in their costumes
I think it appealed to him
being something other than himself
one year a group of high school seniors showed up at the door
in their ghouls, pirates & zombie gore
politely waiting for small ones to leave
they stepped up & in unison
yelled "trick or treat!"
Daddy eyed them all with amusement
then quietly said "trick"
not at all expecting what happened next
half a dozen teens...from the gymnastics team
launched into the most incredible acrobatic routine
right there on our front lawn
while Daddy watched delightedly on
then he held out the bowl full of candy
they each took just one
but Daddy tossed them all more
see...they couldn't know the gift they'd just bestowed
on a man in a wheelchair...
....so often at the mercy of others
and how hard it is to simply watch a show
when able-bodied stand wherever they please
keeping him from being able to see
they'd just given him a personal display
they didn't...but I saw the tears in his eyes
as they cheerfully walked away
their casual trick was Daddy's honored treat
