The Courier's Tale

This insignificant pawn of corporate expediency
Driving an unmarked mini-van freshly gassed
Stuffed with securities and negotiables
A few "family heirlooms" added to the pile
This "senior motor messenger" semi-alert
Instructed to "be elusive" but on schedule
One eye in the rearview mirror
The other watching stagnant traffic
Warned and wary of being targeted
A uniformed companion beside him
Fingering his 357 every few minutes
Recounting tales of his days "in fucking 'Nam"
They begin fuming at the freeway pile up
Skin blistering from this daily snarl
Both speculate in tired unison
The camaraderie of fools
Why not cash in all this paper
Head for the border and beyond
And live like Mayan gods sipping Tequila
"Virgin sacrifices?"
"Virgin sacrifices!"
The most attractive option obvious
A bee-line towards sunny Mexico
The nearest pyramid preserved and waiting
Offering a little respect if not worship
And the perfect retirement plan.
