SELF POEM

Friend
Attending your funeral must be the hardest thing I’ve done
After all, it was supposed to be myself who went first
We used to stride side by side
Eventually you could no longer keep the pace
“It should have been me that died”
I scream, tears on my face
I grip tightly to Earth, fearful of falling off
I spend an eternity looking for you in the faces of others
Searching for any remnant of you
My skin damp
Dewy petals at dawn cover my face
Droplets of false security roll down my newfound flesh ...
