Strengthen
How to then unbreak what is broken
maybe unsay what is now spoken
can poetry every hope to do that
reconfigure here where I am at
For all of these slings and arrows
help in all that life narrows
from broad, wide ambitions
to the most vast of prohibitions
Leaving every scar in its place
so that I may once again face
these tattoos I have earned
while my lifetime so churned
Since both beginnings and ends
have become my best friends
the things I always seek out ...
maybe unsay what is now spoken

For all of these slings and arrows

Shadow
Like a latent memory
it remains
it can still harm
this talisman charm
This dark outline
how it does define
with its penumbra
the edge of bright reason
In this darkened season
one of the soul
where it is the goal
to truly look within
Each blessing and sin
laid out on the table
free of fancy or fable
naked in clear verity
Clearly left in view
of both me an you
allowing us to face
all that can replace
it remains
it can still harm
this talisman charm
This dark outline
how it does define
with its penumbra
the edge of bright reason
In this darkened season
one of the soul
where it is the goal
to truly look within
Each blessing and sin
laid out on the table
free of fancy or fable

Clearly left in view
of both me an you
allowing us to face

Shadows
Some shadows have no need
of the light
appear to delight
in claiming the darkness
Wanting to last
without any contrast
of light and dark
blending in till the end
Flowing ever free
being what they will be
without any conditions
any rules
Defying sages and fools
in all that they say
particularly in the way
they mute the night
Allowing me to write
everything that is wrong
mere lyrics to a song
accompanied by a darker pitch
of the light
appear to delight
in claiming the darkness
Wanting to last
without any contrast
of light and dark
blending in till the end
Flowing ever free
being what they will be
without any conditions
any rules
Defying sages and fools
in all that they say
particularly in the way
they mute the night
Allowing me to write
everything that is wrong
mere lyrics to a song
accompanied by a darker pitch

My Shadow
Can you look out the window without
your shadow getting in the way" ~ Sarah McLachlan
I need very little light
when deep in the night
just enough...
to call my bluff
Let my shadow escape
finally take shape
upon the empty wall
at last revealing it all
This wicked little grin
anticipating some sin
with this faint chilly breeze
whispers just enough to tease
Drawing the perfect silhouette
for...

Silhouette of Regret
So, what deep truth lies inside
this darkness left here denied
dark in its shadow
a delight in all it will not show
For all of this misty grey
has much more to say
about the passage of time
about the subterfuge of rhyme
Leaving me unable to forget
what hides within all of this regret
this darkness left here denied
dark in its shadow
a delight in all it will not show
For all of this misty grey
has much more to say
about the passage of time
about the subterfuge of rhyme
Leaving me unable to forget
what hides within all of this regret

Shadowy
It is much more delicious
shielded from the light
on the other side of night
dipped in inked darkness
or greyed by cool shadow
able to set the tone
together or alone
out on the city street
taking any shape
that you now choose
come win or lose
only now defined
by those you stand behind
shielded from the light
on the other side of night
dipped in inked darkness
or greyed by cool shadow
able to set the tone
together or alone
out on the city street
taking any shape
that you now choose

Shadows
The true poem loves to roam
hide itself inside
escape everything left denied
within the realm of shadow
All that we know
all that we feel
we can no longer conceal
once spilled upon the page
Brought out into the light
in this, the darkest night
its starkness does show
does still contrast
As present, future and past
once more blend
beginning, middle and end
swirled into such a mélange
Till we are lost in the write
by such this introspective sight
until the wind is still
...
hide itself inside
escape everything left denied
within the realm of shadow
All that we know
all that we feel
we can no longer conceal
once spilled upon the page
Brought out into the light

Shadowing
I love to follow myself
let me block out the sun
when day has just begun
dancing again in dark shadow
With so much to know
much more to learn
then let the candle burn
right down to the wick
Penning ink ever thick
all over the blank page
spilling words ever sage
in no particular order
Breaking through the border
the limits I have set
mostly from pure regret
while I see things anew
Writing lines forever true
camouflaged by lies ...
let me block out the sun
when day has just begun
dancing again in dark shadow
With so much to know
much more to learn
then let the candle burn
right down to the wick
Penning ink ever thick
all over the blank page
spilling words ever sage
in no particular order
Breaking through the border

mostly from pure regret
while I see things anew
Writing lines forever true
camouflaged by lies ...

Lengthening
This October afternoon is late
with dusk again at the gate
as the sun has now begun
its long daily descent
Meanwhile these shadows grow
revealing all they know
about the darkness to come
ancient secrets buried deep
Written in brief rhymes to keep
well past their expiration date
while the shade still stretches
making distorted sketches
Poetic lines just left lengthening
with dusk again at the gate
as the sun has now begun
its long daily descent
Meanwhile these shadows grow
revealing all they know
about the darkness to come
ancient secrets buried deep
Written in brief rhymes to keep
well past their expiration date
while the shade still stretches
making distorted sketches

Masque...
I dare do tell
that I wear it so well
this veil
this blind
this masque
allowing me to bask
just here out of sight
in perfect soft shadow
beyond this candle glow
beyond your longing gaze
much less than you imagine
yet more than you deserve
that I wear it so well
this veil
this blind
this masque
allowing me to bask
just here out of sight
in perfect soft shadow
beyond this candle glow
beyond your longing gaze
much less than you imagine
yet more than you deserve

Shadowed
Can you look out the window
without your shadow getting in the way" ~ Sarah McLachlin
They only come out at night
in the perfect light
lit by candle
driven from the corners
to take a chance
dance their dance
finally unafraid
of the mistakes they made
finally free of all that they see
cast aside no longer
without your shadow getting in the way" ~ Sarah McLachlin

Darker Side
The dark sides light" ~ Sarah McLachlin
I always prefer to defer
to the dark shadows
how each one still knows
all about the real me
How a deepest regret
fills in each silhouette
with its own lament
with its own shade of grey
Sweet secrets kept concealed
forever long to be revealed
longing to see the light
come out into the open
While I wear my wry smile
knowing all the while
where my mind goes...
only few can ever...

How a deepest regret
fills in each silhouette

Sweet secrets kept concealed
forever long to be revealed
