Afternoon Shadow
Funny when the sun sets
leaves behind all his regrets
my shadow seems to know
as it begins again to grow
Stretching ever longer
it becomes even stronger
while the sun wanes
till only a darkness remains
For shadows play their part
in the creation of all art
bringing a third dimension
to my deep apprehension
How they do so delight
in the absence of light
subtly blending in
with the nighttime of sin
Becoming more than silhouette
almost like a dark...
leaves behind all his regrets

Light Needs Shadow
I still remember it well
that first time I stole
how it made me feel whole
how it cast its own dark spell
Even though I got caught
I wore a smile on my face
knew this became a place
to which I had been brought
Embracing my cold shadow
feeling its grey ambiguity
with such sensual acuity
knowing what I still know
How I am truly part evil
able to do such bad things
pull out these dragonfly wings
just to savor their retrieval
So, dark thoughts fill my mind
as I again take to the street ...

Sanctum
It is where I go when I write
how I slip deep into the night
join the fellowship of shadows
as they rejoice in anyonymity
Savoring the sanctity
of a christening of ink
rediscovering the link
between heart and mind
As whispered by the soul
like the murmur of a foal
barely even heard
each soft poetic word
Before the alter of rhyme
peeling back all time
making frigid space bend
from its beginning to end
Treasured most secrets

Shadows
They are how darkness
whispers...
just a little hint
amongst all of the glint
Providing in silhouette
all the things we cannot forget
vague as all of its grey
such a splendid ambiguity
Each one shifts as I move
always tongue in groove
linked together
by an uncommon force
All that I am
all I am not
remembers things I forgot
yet always one step behind
Such evil intentions
are mere poetic inventions
to occupy my mind
while I seek what I will...

Light and Shadow
It always still seems
how I dwell between extremes
light then shadow, shadow then light
for in stark contrast I find a delight
Although it is not exact…
to say that opposites attract
better to concede they compliment
like substrate and sediment
Each knowing its true place
having dominion over its space
both sides of a proverbial coin
opposition forged to then conjoin
Leaving me left here to write
about these rituals of the night
dipping my pen in each
learning all that both may teach ...

In Shadow
Let the faint shadow dwell
within the secrets it won’t tell
it won’t dare share
in the bright light of day
For a life lived in the dark
is timid of any spark
that might ignite its flame
read aloud its forgotten name
within the secrets it won’t tell
it won’t dare share
in the bright light of day
For a life lived in the dark
is timid of any spark
that might ignite its flame
read aloud its forgotten name

Shadowed by Shadows
It is where shadows then go
When the sun finally sets
When everyone else forgets
How only listening makes it so
For darkness is their home
A place where they may hide
Affirm what is always left denied
While they continue their lonely roam
Keeping me company here at night
They provide the ink for my pen
Allowing me to now begin again
Commence again this sacred write
Jotting these words upon the page
Where they may then be seen
Upon this off white paper sheen
Lines penned both true and sage
...

Grey
It is my favorite color
adding a little mystery
to my already checkered history
cloaking so many things
Once thought black and white
the true color of shadow
with it subtle flow
shading with its shade
Yet leaving me here
where things remain so clear
adding a little mystery
to my already checkered history
cloaking so many things
Once thought black and white

Legacy of Shadows
I do cast a most lonely light
into a mostly starless night
casting shadows of the past
who never intended to ever last
Mere whispers in the dark
meant to rekindle a faint spark
to return me to better days
unmitigated by disheveling haze
Funny how I can find such regret
filling up every black silhouette
how each can then come to haunt
all that I do still vaunt
With all of these oceans I crossed
unlucky pennies that I have tossed
just to find some bit of luck
in a lifetime spent amuck
So,...

Shadowy
The branches once again bend
as they seek to pretend
that all is well
all is calm
that the warm air is a balm
on this ever deep wound
yet even the bright light
remains out of sight
fleeing the foreground
surrenders all we know to shadow
as they seek to pretend
that all is well
all is calm
that the warm air is a balm
on this ever deep wound
yet even the bright light
remains out of sight
fleeing the foreground
surrenders all we know to shadow

Shadowy
The light trace of ink
reveals as it begins to slink
into the dark corners
the dark recesses
While each line confesses
all that I will not
every curse ever brought
before the altar of rhyme
Tallying up all lost time
in some black bound ledger
some prophetic pledger
casting scatter runes
Recalling forgotten tunes
played upon ancient strings
while a fair maiden sings
her songs of joy and woe
For this is how it is meant to go
passed down through the ages
penned deep upon blank pages ...

Shadowly
Lies woven into dark doubts
listen to these muffled shouts
sharing an aural violence
within this ever-pale silence
My words now said in vain
forgotten like springtime rain
as the echo now fades
in the soft shadowy shades
Then what is there to glean
as this torrent washes clean
all remnants of mortal sin
on this deeply branded skin
So many years gone by
failed attempts to untry
new roads to explore
rekindle hope there may be more
While I...
