Gifts
I hear it in your stories
and in rare moments, I've witnessed it:
your gift --
and I marvel at the empathy
with which you guide families
through their worst moments
Never impatient, judgement at bay
Always respectful, giving space
as they cope
and grieve
and make decisions,
wrapped in the stability of your care,
feeling heard and supported.
I wish you could bring the gift home,
but I know it's finite,
and I know it takes its toll.
In weak moments, I'm envious
that they aren't expected...
and in rare moments, I've witnessed it:

Shuffle shoes
Encourageers of hate are these do-gooders,
that I had the misfortune to meet.
Unfortunate for me,I didn't see, that these individuals was truly
ridiculously lost souls.
To my surprise,you see. When I asked about his life. They shuffled,did the 'Moonwalk',as if in 'M.J's shiny milky white, black blue shoes. Staring blankly at me. As if I alone should know.
I shook my head,and sighed heavily.

Messenger Of Grief
Showing up unannounced
to deliver grim news
it is the worst part of the job
speaking of things
that will break them
for a lifetime
And those that have no answers
haunt and gnaw at you,
knowing that if that one piece of the puzzle
could be discovered
they could have closure
and as pained as they will always be,
they would never have to wonder
who it was that silenced that person they loved
Some embrace me,
after it sinks in,
steadying themselves
from being sucked into the depths
of that...
to deliver grim news

Winter in Cascais
This is a cold day, and bleak too, like a fish left behind
on the grass verge when the anglers go home for lunch
Sport fishing doesn't mean you want to eat the prizes
She is having salmon today at the cafe on the first floor of our building,
I, when a farm boy in Norway, was served salmon or trout every day except Sundays
will settle for a slice of ham, boiled potatoes and salad
Olive oil is used here in Portugal, but I think food tastes better with butter.

The Gray
I think about the things that we used to be
drifting away through the stars; just a memory
they're never far, but I'll never feel him close to me
I revisit the ruined corridors of my mind
and weep for the love lost between the cracks
I assisted in the poisoning of our innocence
crushed beneath the weight of my own sin
pulled to the sound of my children's laughter
I cry on the floor of an abandoned nursery
the face of blame has found a place upon me
waiting until the smoldering embers had died
when I am all that remains...

Ingratitude
I see you, mom, as you leave
a trace of yourself
on everything you touch:
the shallow glasses my sister
keeps filling up with Coke,
the doorknob that sends you
into a world of supermarkets,
pharmacies and banks,
the bright screen that passes
for a friend from Monday morning
to Sunday evening.
You leave a trace of yourself
on everything, on everyone,
yet, who gives back to you?
What's the reward for the years
that fall behind you
as you work your sad magic?
People and things
remain cold to your touch, ...

Heavy mat.
Why,Oh why,Oh hi too why,Oh why.
Do people still leave their flat, apartment or house keys,
rarely making a copy,
Under their door mat?
An obvious place any burglar will look
at.
Leaving you bereft of your valuable key(s).
Please,help me understand why people still do that,in this day and age,
Leave their keys under their door mat.

The existence of humans has not been threatened with extinction since homo sapiens appeared. Our human population was under 1 million prior to that time frame, around 10,000 BCE. During this previous era humans were below 1 million a lot of the time.
