The Devil I Befriended
when I was younger
my mother always told me
friends are meant to lift you up
not drag you down
I honestly never put so much as a thought into it
at least not until recently
when I found myself
being drug six feet under
by the devil I so foolishly befriended
hes got this hold on me
when he goes down
I go down
when he falls
I fall
when he breaks
I break
he's tied a chain to my ankle
the other end attached to his
and anytime I start to climb my way
back to the surface
to the fresh air

Blood and Bread
Your mouth keeps moving
With nothing really to say
You're running out of time
It's too late to start to pray
Your eyes keep blinking
But still you don't see
I don't need another savior
You're nothing new to me
Another fallen angel, another hero taken
Grab a corner and carry the weight
Love the name and forgive the crime
Curse the sky and seethe with hate
There's dust and blood on the floor
Keep digging in your fingernails
Scratch and claw at my soul ...

Posed like a rose
And suddenly there wasn't enough room for me in her garden.
I wasn't good enough to stay forever.
The rose said she chose the cactus over the dandelion.
She said "like me he has thorns"
I asked if love was ever really supposed to hurt me like the pretty rose when I held on to tightly.
From time to time a new flower would enter the garden.

Sunlight comes through in a strong singular ray
Alighting the stark white walls with a lively vigor
So strong it draws out the hints of sherbet orange
Buried deep in the color of sun bleached white
My mind fills the small space with two perfect ideas
A modest bed covered in heavy cloud soft blankets
Entirely too many pillows impossible to escape

honesty blushes within her sacred heart
to be so tender in the light
it hurts this gentleness of being
I shy away from others
fair of disposition I shine bright
it dazzles the eyes and overwhelms
my enthusiasm is too much
I seek like minded people
but it seems I'm much different
my differences set me at odds
I can't help but notice I stick out
an awfuling of hurt
I comfort myself
this isn't my first day of rejection
it won't be my last, I tell myself
resting in the garden I find peace ...

They were just friends
And friends they stayed
Though the attraction was palpable
There was a role to be played
It was in their smiles
Stolen glances from time to time
The heart does really skip a beat
When reading hidden signs
But friends they remained
As imaginations ran a little wild
Wanting and needing and yearning
Staying civil all the while
Then on that fateful day
A formal group picture was taken
Unknowingly they held hands
And the longing re-awakened
