I Worry Boy
once we were warriors filled
with fierce pride
banging our fists to chest
we would shake with the need to bleed
or make bleed
we were men that knew the language of protection
we were men that knew the language of love
toward our family
that knew how to nurture
our hard curbed by their soft
but
warped by booze
violence turned inward
we directed hate at ourselves
letting it spill over our loved ones
and our pride
died
became a curse
cheap piss and beer breath ...

Suburban Huck Finn -1
Three blocks from my childhood home
runs Los Alamitos Creek
a sylvatic, kids paradise
the shoreline choked
with stands of twenty-five foot bamboo.
punctuated by large sycamores
one with a tire swing attached
wearing cut-off jeans
we'd sail over the seven-foot, ice cold swim'n hole
with a woooo hooo we'd let go.
along the shallows
crawdad and minnow fishing
was the sport of choice
strictly catch and release
the water was tainted with quicksilver, mercury
so what we caught we couldn't eat.

wishing, O how I wished daily for release

Me, Part 3: Swim team and Mrs Lee
In those days,
really little kids were allowed to walk places
alone.
It must have taken at least a half-hour
to get to the pool.
Morning practice and lessons,
home for lunch,
then back all afternoon for free swim and another practice –
What a glorious life
for two months of the year!
The rest of the time
was more like jail or a morgue.
Mrs Lee kept the curtains closed tight
lest children get distracted
by signs of life.
Obviously not content with her existence,
she was determined to take us all down with...

Treasured Scents
Lit match ignites incense stick
sandalwood aroma
wafts over my face
fond and mysterious

What was the prevalent fragrance
In my grandparents' home?

of coffee percolating in a pot
inviting boyish morning glee
contemplating what days adventure might be
Or paired with ginger snaps
baking in the oven

Me, Part Two: Melville Street
memories
pinned loosely to
a place
and therefore to
a time
nestled briefly between
first sentience and the meddling of adults
Random still frames:
feral preschoolers
grass stains, sidewalk scrapes
raw hotdog snack on the tire swing
wood bugs under rocks
the soft lap of Mrs. Cookie
Joey on his trike mostly naked
Best friend Rowan, my hero
wilder than her fiery hair
she spat at my mother!
She confided that she was a boy
and I nodded
yeah, of course
And that...

Me, Part One: Beginnings
I remember
exactly
nothing.
Which is to be expected, of course.
I have no recollection
of screaming my way into existence
on a snowy night.
All I know is that I arrived
just in time
for my dad to make it to hockey –
or, so legend has it.
But here are the few facts I have gleaned:
Three homes in about two years –
young family in transition.
A feisty older brother
And an even older sister
with a newly broken leg in a cast upon my arrival.
She says mom couldn’t/wouldn’t get out of bed...
exactly
nothing.

No - A Word I Can No Longer Say
I used to be so full of "fuck you"
My heart was passionate,
My mind opinionated.
Boy, you couldn't tell me shit!
The years have gone by,
And I've grown older.
Days turned to decades
Of shutting up and backing down,
Playing by everyone else's rules
Just to get by.
Nights I've spent screaming and blubbering
Into blackness
The only time my voice truly finds me
Crawling back on hands and knees
After hours and hours
Of choking on words unsaid in the daylight.
These days I...

stay safe
my sincerity bleeds honesty
my fragility answers you
from hurt spatter, I talk to you
emerging is vulnerability
my thoughts are turning
and I speak in whispers with a soft voice
this is who I am
truth be told I hid myself away
but you noticed me, didn't you?
me with sparklers in my hands
a child who never grew
lost in neverland
abandoned in the dark
with thoughts, I made it to safety
not knowing what happened in the dark
my mind never lets me see through the haze
don't tell me what...

a little bit of magick
My son begged me
to buy him a wand
and was so disappointed
when he realised
he couldn't do real magic
he tried to turn me
invisible
and it obviously didn't work
It didn't stop him from trying
various spells
for three days
as I tried to explain
that pretend is fine
while offering him
a different kind of magic
waving the wand over his head
and proclaiming
that "buddy, is beautiful and clever"
and asking him if that spell
made feel beautiful and clever
and...

The Hood
When you
FROM THE HOOD,
LIVING in a
RUNNED DOWN,
RURAL NEIGHBORHOOD!!!
When your CHURCH, your SCHOOL,
your BEAUTY SALON,
BARBER SHOP and
the LIQUOR STORE,
is only WITHIN
WALKING DISTANCE,
When the ICE CREAM
TRUCK RUNS during the DAY, and
LATE AT NIGHT!!
WHEN KIDS ARE ON
BIKES, SCOOTERS,
SKATEBOARDS and SKATES,
WHEN YOU BETTER
HURRY HOME QUICK,
the STREET LIGHTS will come ON,
HURRYING HOME BECAUSE IT'S LATE,
When it's a SCHOOL NIGHT,
and YOU have to BE IN BED by 8,

How Sweet is This Coming!
I love who you are today,
your every panting breath,
your every child-like whimper.
Pressing deep, I think of
all your yesterdays—every
moment that has shaped you
into the woman I love today.
Oh God, how sweet is this coming!
your every panting breath,
your every child-like whimper.
