Secrets - Doubts
He weren't there, lad,' your dad says, as if guessing my thoughts. 'Our Scott's looked into it. Vince Macarthur never went into the woods that afternoon. He only popped out to go to the corner shop and that took no longer than five minutes and then he fell fast asleep in front of tele. He were woken up later when the police came.'
'How does Scott know that?' I say, hoping my question doesn't come across as rude.
'Never mind how he knows. Are you going to tell us what really happened?'
'I already have.'
Your dad stands up. 'Okay, lad, that's it....

Secrets - Robert And Gordon
Later, I check on Robert. He's sleeping in his room. 'Night, buddy,' I whisper, adjusting the brown teddy bear so it won't fall.
It is quiet, far too quiet for me. The static stillness of the country gives the impression of time slowing down, stopping altogether. I find a beer in the fridge, sit on the sofa bed and drink. So much for good intentions. Fitness, diet. I don't want to go to sleep. Sleep frightens me, has done ever since Vince Macarthur brought his crowbar down on my head, screaming his innocence again and again. My recovery from the attack took several years....

The frogs like to speak to me
They tell me lots of cool things
Once they said you loved books

Secrets - Back to Lancashire (2)
Hills, and more hills, conjuring up thoughts of the old tongue twister about the ragged rascal running round and round the rugged hill. I get lost on the way. After stopping to look at the map, I retrace the route over a bridge and past a tiny village church, the colour of hay.

freedom tastes like today
Your laughter
is the embodiment
of the perfect Spring day
a bright sun breeze tusseling
your dark curls
For just a moment
this is a snapshot
of an uncomplicated childhood
the kind Hollywood makes
pretty movies about
For just a moment
I remember what it was like
to spin carefree in the sun
wet green grass under my feet
and believe there was no greater
freedom than right there and then
with laughter spilling from me

in adulthood

Going Dutch
seem to be reminiscing alot of late. today about the 14 schools i went to, in the space of just 11 years, the first two in Dutch (my favourite, the second Dutch school, i was teachers pet. i know this, as she kept me in a cage at the back of the class!) in reality, i was invited to her house. she was widowed, her husband had been in the Dutch Resistance during WWII, and died at the ands of the Nazi's. she taught me how she made her own butter, and was generally a really lovely woman, that i desperately hoped would adopt me, anything to get away from my family! her name was Mrs Paul...

The Road to Pastrami
I don't need a guru
I've no use for a swami
I just need a trip back home
to find the best pastrami
The Jewish delis of my childhood
gleaming buckets of sauerkraut
pastrami so hot it steamed the bread,
sharp-crusted rye, without a doubt
Frilly toothpicks
red or blue
secured the mountains of beef
so much food, but I could eat it all
to exactly no one's relief
Maybe it's just stupidity
but I'm craving Miami's humidity
I want the ocean and the burning sand
I want to reexplore my childhood land
...

I know of a man who can be outspoken at times
he is also very rich, which can be an aber
the struggle to find meaning in life when
you can have all the physical things life offers
To be wealthy is a strain, do try it if you can
the man in mind also has a great sense of
wicket humor, which makes a so very human
He has the idea that people of means should
have as many children as they can
I agree the well-situated can afford to give
children a proper upbringing and a great education

I like winter evenings in Portugal
lit wood fire
my wife prepares the evening meal
On my way home one evening
a police officer stopped me
something about my headlight
I thought of offering him a bribe
but had no idea how to go about it
Police officers are not well-paid
and Christmas was coming up

The officer looked disappointed
the traffic fine is sent by post
I told my wife about this episode
the hairdresser in the village
