The Takla Makan Mystic (a story from the infancy of my prose writing)
The Takla Makan Mystic
(a story from the infancy of my prose writing)
The warm dry air and burning yellow sands stretched out to the horizon. The sand dunes had exquisite forms and ripples and dust devils swirled about this harsh brutal land.
The train pushed ahead and Gesar thought about home. Back home, far away from the desolate Takla Makan desert, was a land of rolling green mountains and mists with the Yangtze cutting deep gorges. There, panda bears lived high up in the forest of bamboo and eucalyptus. There it was peaceful in some...

Wishes of Resolve for the New Year
( a Renga: linked haiku/senryu )
1
wherever you are,
be the spirit of Buddha
—protect those in need
2
give comfort to those
who are candles to your soul,
and you are their light
3
free those in anguish
from past year of suffering,
—you will walk the path
4
be this in your time,
as smooth pebbles on the shore
we too are the waves
5
accept these pebbles
for creatures that run, swim,...

Mantric Sounds to Fall Asleep
Cooling ground
Beneath my feet
Slowing down
With each heart beat
Peace is found
Among the trees
Beneath my feet
Slowing down
With each heart beat
Peace is found
Among the trees

Buddhist Nun
Buddhist Nun
Eyes which echo like conch shells
From canyons of stone and sun
Where Bodhi trees collect on hillsides
For the little Buddhas
to proliferate enlightenment
Where her eye facets go starry
Like the diamond of the sutra
Spoken by Siddhartha
But growing like a child in her scriptural womb
Where consolation floats like a constellation
Of Himalayan stars over a unicorn forest
Where the singing bowls
Turn her mind into a magnifying glass
Which focuses the sun of truth to burn a hole
Through the stale air of...

poets and religion
Religion and a poet
When I was nine years of age I came to see religion
as a fairy tale and as we know the bible is written
by many scribes during a time, some of them were wise.
I like the Old Testament because it is full
of blood and thunder, the New Testament is a construction
a clean-up of the real thing making palatable for the squeamish.
I think the creator of our world as an overarching intelligence that when the job was done left its way.
The creator is neither good nor bad for it has no interest in
the world besides creating it, so it...

My 'religion of peace'
I look back into the course of human history
and see hundreds of millions
of people dead,
many more than that suffering,
and many more than that deluded
by this so-called "GOD":
be it the "God of Abraham"
or "Allah".
I look into the present state of humanity
and see hundreds of millions
of people suffering,
many more than that ill,
and many more than that still deluded
by this so-called "GOD":
be it the "God of Abraham"
or "Allah".
I ask what is common through-out all of this?
I see...

Six Things You Should Know About Me - An Anthology
Plug into these tunes
To honor the naked wounds
I display here for you-
One:
I used to be a cutter
A decade of self-inflicted torture
A variety of bangs and bruises
Cigarette burns and chemical scorches
Starving for those bones to show
Piercing safety pins where they do not go
When I asked for help- they gave me pills
At school surrounded by imbeciles
So they sent me to an out-patient hospital
They didn’t like me there; I was...

Haiku/Senryu New Year Wish
1
where e'er you may live
be the spirit of the wind
for both weak & strong
2
take care of each one
who has touched your heart & soul
and has lifted you
3
free one from anguish
the year was grim for many
and one will free you
4
my simple wishes
like smooth pebbles on the shore
come and be the wave

take these pebbles for
creatures that run, fly and...

Temple Haiku Renga: A New Dawn
一 (ichi)
poised with posture straight
a slave girl ascends the steps
she enters alone
二 (ni)
slowly beats a drum
a voice resonant and low
mantra chants thrumming
三 (san)
breeze before sunrise
brass bells on red cords swaying
chiming like birdsong
四 (shi/yon)
with bracelets sliding
she lowers with fluid grace
to rest on her knees
五 (go)
serene upturned face
she offers jasmin joss sticks
and cultured flowers

Smooth Pebbles
( senryu )
Every swooning blade of grass vindicated.
The deep blue silence of a turning wheel.
A precise number of fireflies in the apples.
The coiled jealousy of all reptiles.
The palsy of a prisoner's first sob.
A tranquil sorrow in a dog's rib cage.
All faces obliterated from the moon.
Nirvana observed among smooth pebbles.
The slough of mountain summits in decline.
Every planet reprieved of its orbit.
The ecstasy...

Namaste
These words bear the weight of a thousand emotions
Expression of thought
Embedded within my mind's mechanisms
The complexity of how I think,
Is something I can't comprehend
But I find myself dumbfounded
When the paper touches pen
The words I can't ever find to say
Just pop up in my head
As if I wrote this yesterday
The brain is an instrument
For consciousness to express
This pen is my outlet
For words to manifest
This paper is my temple,
Where I meditate
I am the Buddha,
In a tranquil state
This is the place where I find...
